Long answer: Weed is practically legal here, and is for anyone who wants to pay for a medical marijuana card. Its more prolific along 16th street mall than anywhere in California I've been, which says enough in itself

You'd be surprised. Its not uncommon to see people smoking weed at coffee shops or at parks. There are a couple of bars downtown that reek of weed and nobody seems to care. Austin is a pretty laid back city.

Usually if people can do that, cops have bigger issues to deal with..cities where not a lot goes on, cops tend to bust those people.

yea we were talking about that at work yesterday. it is a huge hassle for the school and cops for crowd control not to mention the 50,000 bucks it cost the school in trying to keep the unsanctioned event safe with extra cops and all the cleanup.

even the student government is supporting the crack down, the student body VP wrote a lengthy piece in the college news paper asking people to not go and to tell their friends to not go.

There are a few articles I've read on how marijuana gathering actually helped boosted the local economy. They were interviewing local restaurants and barristas and everyone was ecstatic, which I thought was rather interesting. Honestly, when was the last time you saw a violent stoner or have you ever actually seen one, most of the time they just want some Fun-ions.
