Considering this is all family stuff, I still don't see why insurance is involved. If I get hurt on a family memeber's property, insurance, lawsuits and lawyers are never entering the picture.

Eh when it comes to medical costs it will. Unless you have a spare 127k laying around you feel the insurance you pay for shouldnt pay.

Because medical costs are excessive and that's why you PAY for insurance, to cover unreasonable and unexpected costs.

This. I love my family but if her medical bills were in the tens of thousands of dollars, I'm not clearing out my savings when I pay my insurance to take care of stuff like this.

I'm not 100% sure where the $127k figure came from because that seems excessive if it's just medical bills from a fractured arm. I'm guessing as a human resources professional she had paid medical leave, etc., to cover lost time.

This whole thing stinks. Some major network will get an "EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, TONIGHT!" setup and we will get the rest of the story.

if the injury requires a hospital then they just got involved. unless you are mr money bags and pay cash for the hospital bill.

How do you get money out of a kid? He has no assets. I don't think you can hold the parents responsible either... but what Lawyer would take up such a laughable case?

I'll be honest, I didn't even know you could suea minor. I know they could be criminally charged "as an adult", I didn't know you could sue them in civil court....

IANAL, and all that jazz.

She has a job and insurance, so why would she have to pay 127K out of pocket if her health insurance covers fractures.

I think she just tried a money grab and failed.

Her insurance may have required her to try and collect from whoever caused the injury instead of her insurance.

That's my question. My wife works in human resources, she's my go to person on questions and understanding about stuff like this.

I can't believe that she doesn't have her own medical insurance and/or medical or sick leave that covered lost time.

Of course, it very well could be that her own insurance are being greedy assholes too and are refusing to pay her medical claims because the kid's, father's insurance should pay it.

Again, fuck most insurance companies.

Also, she's stupid for having said ANYTHING about the damn snack tray at a party. Talk about vapid...

Read the mother died a year ago and this looks like a cash grab against the estate. Either way, she lost.

Thats BS. IF she had medical insurance, all she has to do is go to the hospital, show her card and get it fixed.

no money out of pocket.

She just wanted extra cash. Now she is trying to get sympathy. She took a bad gamble and lost badly.

Umm, I don't know where you are that medical insurance is so wonderful, here in the US they very well may have denied the claim.

My mother tripped while in a store, injuring her wrist. Due to pain and swelling she went to the ER in case it was fractured, after x-rays and examinations it was clear that it was a sprain, she got a brace and made an appointment with her regular doctor to follow up for possible physical therapy. Imagine her surprise when she received an $11k bill for the ER visit, because she mentioned that it occurred at a store and the medical insurance refused coverage on the grounds that the store was liable for the accident damage.

My mom had to threaten a suit against the store to get their insurance to cover the medical bills.

In the case of this woman in CN, her attorney claims they have bills from multiple surgeries on the wrist. That's quite possible if the fracture caused damage to the median nerve, or the carpal tunnel.

Overall if I have to choose between believing this woman is just out to get money, versus believing insurance companies are screwing with her over real medical expenses, I will tend to be against the insurance companies as I have seen a lot more cases of BS out of them.
