Audio not swapping to bluetooth device

My scenario:

I am playing a game or listening to music using my laptops speakers. I connect a bluetooth speaker or headphones. Existing sound keeps coming from the speakers. New sound comes over bluetooth. I need to relaunch whatever program was playing in order to move the audio over to bluetooth. I am annoyed.

Case in point I had to relaunch fallout 4 in order to use my bluetooth headphones.

Is there a way to make windows 10 automatically play everything over bluetooth rather than just newly launched programs?

When the headphones are connected they are already set as default device (and default communication device for the handsfree mode). When they are disconnected the default sets back to speakers
