The issue with audiophiles is the law of diminishing returns. There is a feeling you get when you go from cheap headphones to $70 Grados or Senns. It's like you're hearing the music for the first time again because you hear new parts of the music. If you get hooked, you keep on trying to recreate that feeling. You move to $200 headphones and buy a dedicated headphone amp and you get the feeling again. However, the jump wasn't as big this time. So you move up and buy multiple sets of headphones and multiple amps to try to get some "synergistic" effect. At this point, whatever difference is minor at best even if you've trained yourself to hear nuances in the music more. Maybe there is an slight, audible difference when you buy a $2000 power cord, $150 wall socket, and $5000 on interconnects. However, you probably spent 10 grand on trying to recreate even 5% of the jump from disposable ear buds to an entry level set of cans. Like getting an object to go the speed of light; there is a wall at the end. It takes more and more energy or money to get closer to that wall, but you'll never get there.
