Audio and HDMI questions.

I never really thought about it, but as a temporary solution I suppose I could use component (those are the red/white I think) cables to run from the Xbox to the receiver, leaving the other optical and HDMI slots for the Blu-ray player and cable box.

It will only be used for Kinect games, but I assume there would be a pretty massive degradation in quality doing that?

Red and white are the left and right channels for audio. Component is 3 cables, http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...mponent-cables.jpg/220px-Component-cables.jpg it is HD. But now you're just going to have to deal with switching TV inputs and receiver inputs as well to get Video and Audio.

That's the reason I replaced my 4 year old Denon. It only had 2 HDMI inputs and I had 3-4 devices I needed to hook up. It's disposable tech man! 😛

Heh, yeah, so true. I just reserved the $250 receiver, so can pick it up later. Thanks again for all of the help. 🙂

Now to determine whether the 4GB is enough for the Xbox, or if we need to return it for one with a bigger drive. :hmm:

you can use usb hdd's for the 360 just fyi.

i'm also not sure why you wouldn't be getting sound out of the hdmi cable. you shouldn't need hdmi + optical to get sound at all. hdmi should be just fine for the sound, even surround sound.

(i didn't read the whole thread not sure if you already went over this)

Oh right, did not really think of that. I have a USB 3.0 1TB external drive that could do the trick. I assume it's not much of a hassle to set that up?

Yeah Phanuel informed me that my receiver sucks, that's why it doesn't work. 😀

An external HD for an Xbox will only be useable for reading media files off of (music/videos) and maybe storing game save files to. You won't be able to install any games or apps to it as far as I'm aware. You'll need the internal drive for that sort of thing.

I've got an old Onkyo that only has 2 HDMI ports. I just got one of those HDMI switches from Monoprice, so hopefully that does the trick; $25 is a lot nicer than $300+ to replace the receiver.
 
Ok, so I got the receiver home and set-up; works like a charm! It even sounds louder, which is great. Before I had to crank it all the time and not having to switch around my inputs every time I did something is awesome.

One question though, I now have an extra device that requires an ethernet connection, but I do not have any additional plugs around. I looked around at switches and they all look to be huge; does anyone know of a small (say 1 input, two output) switch that I can use, or any other alternative that would work here? Essentially have ethernet from wall needing to go to Blu-ray player and Xbox (so freaking obnoxious that the Xbox does not come with built-in wi-fi).

Just get a cheapie hub, you don't need a switch for that.

The current generation of 360s all have built-in WiFi. How old is yours?
