Agreed. When you're outdoors firing, the loudest part is the action and (depending on your target) the bullet thwacking into stuff. It's pretty cool to hear the splash if you shoot into\over water.

it's the tax stamp plus about a 4-6 month wait and the country sherriff has to sign off. iirc in this state. the gun store said you usually just write 'collector's purposes' for the reason when you apply.

if your record's clean and you live in the south you can buy about anything, given you got the cash.

off water? no. if you shoot water and the bullet ends up anywhere other than in the water, you broke physics.

water will 'catch' slower rounds pretty quickly. rifle rounds can just shatter on impact (with the fragments still penetrating the water).

So think of it as the cost of a decent rifle. And you can use it on more than 1 firearm. Seems like a good investment to me.... 😉

That's the purpose of the tax stamp. Then the suppressor manufacturers (correctly) guess that if you're willing to pay the $200 tax stamp, you'll also be willing to pay 2, 3 or 4 times what the same suppressor costs elsewhere in the world.

I'm not saying you're poor, but that's what gun control is all about, keeping weapons out of the hands of the poor. Even in Europe, even in England, those with lots of money can legally own any gun they want.

What do you do for optics then? Anything decent is over $1000. NightForce, ACOGs etc

And you can make one if you want after form 1....with a metal lathe I could make one for $50. So $250.

Some... like Surefire's 762 cans will do "double duty" on their 5.56 mounts but most won't.

Depends what you get. The Yankee Hill 7.62 will mount on the 556 mount.

Easy way around it? Dont get a QD mount. Just get a standard thread pitch suppressor and have your barrels threaded accordingly. 🙂

Private pond, on nearly 1000 acres, with handguns. Not too much danger. A great game is to take a 2 liter soda bottle, shake it up and throw it out in the water. It'll float at the level of the soda (so you can pour some out if you're not a great shot,) and when you hit it, it fires a geyser of soda into the air.

The most amount of money I've spent on optics was $150 before tax for a Nikon scope on my bolt action .22.


I don't shoot rifles that often and when I do, they are military surplus rifles like a M1 Garand, 1903 Springfield, etc. I won't modify them to use modern scopes.


also my definition of decent and your definition must not jive. high end military optics are a lot more than "decent" to me.

Theres also safety advisories on all cell phones and gas pumps to not use the two together.
Safety overkill is the result of frivolous lawsuits, not scientific fact.

It may very well be possible a bullet shot off water can kill someone, just like cellular RF can possibly ignite gasoline.

You realize that the US has heavier regulations on "silencers" than most of the rest of the world, right? Elsewhere they're considered safety devices that save your hearing and are available cheaply, usually without registration.
