attn gun nuts: SILENCERS are cool!

now that i have your attention and you're properly enraged, yes, i know it's 'suppressor.' i don't call magazines clips, either. but i might if it pisses someone off. 😀

anyway. went to range yesterday for the first real test of my buddies USP .45 tactical.

now with 100% more tactical in the form of a gemtech blackside. he actually used to carry this thing, so he had the tall sights swapped for standard night sights (holster issues from the tall front post).

so it's got no sights. fortunately, a) length the suppressor basically draws a nice horizonal plumb line towards what you want to die and b) he's got a nice light/laser unit on it. that was already an excellent gun, but using the laser with the can screwed on, holy shit. using a little muscle memory and the laser, you can shoot dead easy <6" groups at 10-15m or so. it's just cheating.

here's a vid of him firing it after we started making uneducated attempts at using it wet. gemtech says vaseline is fairly ideal, so far as grease mediums go. unfortuneately, he's a bit paranoid with his stuff and won't let me put water in it, which is supposed to be best.

gemtech is apparently also right that you should pack the first two rings with lube- no more, no less. less makes less suppression and it lasts less long, more doesn't seem to add any. he did threaten to punch me in the face if i shoved the whole thing in vaseline, but i did put a shitton in it right after this video. performance was similar. target got a little greasy.

now i'm trying to convince him to buy a carbon fiber suppressor for his .30-06.

Suppressors are super kick ass! I want to pick up a .30 cal suppressor, a rimfire suppressor and a 9mm suppressor still.

Heres how we spend our evenings out in the country. 😀

there's also that 'silenced' revolver, unless you count the hammer falling against it.

how is that 5.56 in real life? it's so hard to tell from videos. there's so much range echo in mine that it sounds a lot louder than it is.

dry, it sounds like a decent sized firecracker. misnomer aside, it's all pop and no crack, and hearing protection is not remotely needed. with grease fairly liberally applied, the first couple shots are damn near silent except for the action. sounds like a gas blowblack airsoft pistol.

The suppressor brings the rifle down to about what an unsuppressed rimfire would sound like. Much, much quieter. I sort of wished I had went with a .308 suppressor and just used it on my 556 rather than buying a dedicated 556 but meh, whatever.

you ever shot it wet? i've heard rifle suppressors generally shouldn't be greased, but i see some that say they can use water.

schneiderguy, you live in a state where it's also illegal for the mentally ill to own firearms...yet apparently you do...

😛

AFAIK the form they have you fill out only asks whether you have been judged mentally deficient or been committed to a mental institution. Which I haven't yet :awe:

wait silencers are legal?

In most states yes. You just need to pay $200 for a tax stamp thing and then you can buy one.

it's the tax stamp plus about a 4-6 month wait and the country sherriff has to sign off. iirc in this state. the gun store said you usually just write 'collector's purposes' for the reason when you apply.

if your record's clean and you live in the south you can buy about anything, given you got the cash.

They just legalized them in Washington. Well, we could own them before, but now we can use them. Mine are coming out of the safe as soon as that law goes into effect!

I watched the episode of Mythbusters where they were shooting pistols with silencers. I was suprised how loud they were even with the silencer attached. (~120dB).

Hollywood has no idea how guns work. They have silenced revolvers, burst fire from single shot weapons, exploding gasoline tanks, fireball muzzles, dudes flying through the air, etc.
The downside is because so many people around the world are unfamiliar with guns, they get some pretty crazy notions about how they work.

www.IMFDB.org clears up some of these issues.

That was the whole purpose of the Mythbusters episode: to compare hollywood sounds to the real sounds.

it's not that far off. the fairly silent 'clack clack' you hear in movies sometimes is certainly possible. like i said, the first two shots with that suppressor after greasing it were DAMN quiet (after a mag, the grease is gone- it's still shiny inside but most has vaporized). an old canon digital camera doesn't exactly do the best job of capturing it- and the echos around a small concrete range make it seem a lot worse.

now, the super high-pitched laser-gun 'pew pew' sound, notsomuch.

Agreed. When you're outdoors firing, the loudest part is the action and (depending on your target) the bullet thwacking into stuff. It's pretty cool to hear the splash if you shoot into\over water.
