I find it a bit sad really, the submission forum for the 2.5 client began on 21 November, 2003 and it's still going.
No new programmer, no new candidates for botulism and plague :(
I thought (and hoped) I would have been running this for years :( :(
It seemed to be doing better when Sengent were running it ( just my opinion of course, wonder what ever happened to the $25000? :D )

Oh darn... did I forget to mention that I got that check 5 years ago? How did that slip my mind? :p

Thought we were supposed to split that ;)

I might go back to SOB...had some fun with that after I left D2OL...oh well, I guess I will have to do a little bit of research and see if anything catches my fancy.

Some information for you ...

BOINC can be distributed and run via ACTIVE DIRECTORY in any mode desired (user specific, all users, SERVICE) ...

Apparently once distributed, there is little or no direct control of the client possible from a remote computer. It should be possible to uninstall the client and re-install the client with changed parameters without much effort. I believe that I can also use a script to restrict access to the folder from the prying of network users.

I'll do some testing but, apparently, BOINC seems to be an attractive possibility. I'll share my testing methodologies and scripts with anyone that wants them.

If the testing bears out ... then the next step may be to select a BOINC project ....

I am leaning towards Climate Prediction or SETI until the ORBIT project comes online in, perhaps, 2006

What do you folks think ???

Thanks

mondo

Crazee was doing some research into BOINC deployment at work. He might have some more info.

Kind of sad about FaD closing. But glad it was a success!

I wanted to give this information:

I see several comments that Folding@Home uses too much ram.

With the newest Folding@Home console/service client you can set the amount of ram that you want the client to report to the Assignment Server and you will get WUs that can run in the set amount.

Even without doing that, on a system with 1 GB ram and default settings for the client I got a WU that is using 15,552 KB. The client is using 3,024 KB. For a total of 18,576 KB (as shown in Task Manager).

I honestly don't know - is this a lot of ram usage?

The download size was 325,454 KB - which is on the large size for regular WUs, I think. Thought most of them were under 50 KB.

Boo :( I guess DC will be over for me 12/16.

I ran LHC@Home for awhile, but it doesn't play nice with my computer....locks it up about once a day, and doesn't like me using the computer for other stuff while it's running :|

I really liked FaD because it seemed like a good-hearted project that needed some help. Oh well, I'm glad for the small contribution I was able to make to the project.

Looks like a lot of the teams currently in fad are going to be folding soon so A little friendly team jabbing with our old friends like timo will be possible so we could inject a little fun which folding seems to be missing into it.

I must say I'm impressed with the way the head guy( David Baker) at Rosetta at home has posted in both the Xpc and the FAD forums offering to answer any questions about his project.

If I can make it to 300, I'll probably stop there. I'll probably leave DC again for a while, as I can't find another project at the moment that sparks my interest. Thanks for the PM Freewolf!'s for all the legal adults!

BOINC has excellent remote control-capabilities, either by using the included BOINC Manager, but in this you can only select one computer at once, or other tools like BoincView.

To enable remote access, you need to add a file to BOINC-dir, remote_hosts.cfg. On each line of this text-file, add a computer-name or ip-address of a remote computer you will enable remote access from. So, just add the name and/or ip of the computer you're normally using, and all the other installs can be monitored/controlled.

To further guard against malicious users, v5.2.6 is now enforcing the password-function. The password is set in gui_rpc_auth.cfg, so just choose a password of your liking.

In service-install, access-rights on BOINC-directory is automatically set, so only installing user and admins can access the directory at all.

If you're doing some quick tests of BOINC, CPDN isn't really the best choise, since you'll very often get a Sulphur-cycle model, and this takes normally over 2 months to crunch...

For testing it's better to use Einstein@home or SETI@Home, both has fairly short wu, stable application, and appart for Seti's Wednesday-outage for backup-purposes is normally up with unlimited work-supply.

Wow.... I didn't realize FaD was drawing to a close. I thought it'll go on for years too. Looks like I'll be switching to F@H when FaD ends...
