I love linux now...
It is possible to get a fully working, fast computer for $200.00, which can act as a web server..
It is also fast, quiet, and portable...
Also it is quite funny!
Lets imagine uncle Bill right now!

Detailed Spects here

Well, X-BOX shares a lot in common with PC...
See this articles at firingsquad about X-BOX hardware... here
Edit: I dont have an X-BOX, but ti would be nice to have some guinea pig, who would be willing to test the Linux...
Any volunteers?

Imagine the faces of your friends....
Now, it might be a good idea to buy the X-BOX... you are right hypersonic...
Edit: Since this thread is about X-BOX and Operating System, go to Operating Systems part of AT and express your joy!

How does it work? In one sentence, they say you have to make a boot CD and boot off of it...in the next sentence, they say the Xbox DVD drive won't read CDRs. Huh?

I was wondering that too vetteguy. I also wonder what the resolution would be like having Linux going to your tv. How readable would it be?

But it should work with CDRW...:)
Pickup a CDRW media, and just use it as a CD-R... That might do it!

Two words:
Who Cares

We all knew the day would come that gaming consoles and PCs would eventually become the same. I personally wouldnt consider turning a $250.00 xbox into a PC as an experiment. If I ever did buy it, it would be for one thing, gaming.

Nifty technical trick, kudos to the hackers (in the true sense of that word) who made it work.

But if you already own a PC, why bother putting Linux on Xbox other than to annoy MS (which is not necessarily a bad reason, but just not a functionally useful reason)?

And if you don't already own a PC, then do you even know what Linux is, or care, or have the knowledge and ability to install Linux on your Xbox?

wnied: i care

i wanna use my xbox to play divx's and i'd like to use it to run mp3's saved on it, so sorry if you don't

Just get a used notebook for $200. It will be slower but you get a kb and screen. Perfect for Linux.

wnied: This thread makes it obvious that a lot of people care. Just because we knew it would probably happen doesn't mean it's not cool when it finally does happen. There is a way to set it up so that you can be able to run linux and play games.

Why would you want to put linux on the xbox? It's like getting an extra mini computer for $200. It's PORTABLE. You can use it for a portable divx player, you can play your mp3s through any tv. It can be a server for your home network. It can be a web server. There are lots of cool things you can do with this.

same here, i have followed it since it started, but eh just havent set my own up yet....this is really sweet you can get mandrake on it now :)

Okay, here's my question. Say I don't like it - can I go back to the ORIGINAL Xbox OS and never even know it happened? Or, better yet, can I use LILO to dual-boot Xbox OS and Mandrake 9?

Can you make the X-Box dual bootup, choose to either run X-Box normally to play games or bootup in Linux OS?

From their official faqs:
Will I still be able to play games once Linux is on my hard disk?
That depends on the solution you choose. If you run Linux through the XBE bootloader on an Xbox with a modchip, there's a dual-boot solution. There are also "Live CD's" that make it possible possible to run Linux from a CD without having your hard disk modified at all.
If you use the replacement ROM method, you would have to install both ROMs in parallel to be still able to run games.

And
You say I can either boot Linux through the "XBE bootloader" or through your "custom ROM". What are the advantages and the disadvantages of these methods?
If you still want to play games on your Xbox, you will choose the XBE method. Linux is then started as if it was a game, either from CD or from hard disk. The ROM method completely replaces the Xbox system software. No games any more, buf faster boot, and you are in full control of the system, i.e. you can use the whole hard disk space for Linux. Note that while the XBE method is already usable, the ROM method is still far from finished.
