Just refreshed both builds this week. No major changes.

No changes again this week. I might have a pretty good configuration going. :)

Nice of you to come up with a budget gaming box with OS included for under $500 ken.

I would like to point out that the GTX 1070 ITX single-fan sale ends tomorrow, while a dual fan card is available for just $10 more until Wednesday. The bigger cooler is definitely worth $10 more, it will run more quietly at load and isn't so easily restricted in terms of turbo clocks.

After Wednesday, you might want to look at the triple-fan, semi passively cooled and factory overclocked G1 Gaming for $400.

I would also like to point out that for the next 11 hours you can grab a Corsair CX550M for just $40, just a few bucks more than the EVGA 500W in the current $1000 build. CX550M is definitely the better unit, with better efficiency, 2 years longer warranty and a little bit better quality components (though still a budget unit).

What's a sample of games the lowrange build can run at 60FPS 1920x1080 res?

Thanks!

Is a G4560 and GTX1050 a good pair? It seems like it, but most of the reviews online talking up the G4560, are using Z-series boards, and DDR4-3000 or better RAM. Which won't be available on a more "peasant" motherboard, like $70 B250 board. (ASRock makes some interesting ones.)

Noob question - I assume the i5-7600K has taken the place of the i5-6600K given the price similarities?

About to do a new build (after 8 years), any reason to wait as far as price drops resulting from new releases?

rh71,

If you are doing a low end build consider the new pentium G4560. It's hyperthreaded the same as the i3, costs 40% less, but only gives up less than 10% performance.

If you are doing a mid range build wait for a bit until AMD Ryzen has launched. It might impact prices or decisions about the best CPU for the budget.

Zen's not going to be a candidate for either low or midrange for a while, not until models with lower core counts come out.

Yes I'm quite curious what motherboard can be used with that G4560

I'm running one on a Z170 board, they'll work on most LGA1151 boards as long as the BIOS has been updated.

Edit: To be more specific, the board I have it in is an ASRock Z170 Extreme4 that ended up in my HTPC with a Skylake i5 with which I flashed the BIOS before the swap.

Same here, crashtech. Mine's on an ASRock Z170 Pro4S ATX, with 16GB Team Vulcan DDR4-2400, and a 240GB SSD, and a GTX950, and Win10.
