Great Info Rattledagger,

I can't tell all you folks how appreciative I am for these great tips ... I would figure them out but that would take a lot of time ... I just don't have that kind of time right now.

I'll pass on CPDN for the pilot on the server ... I will probably do SETI since I really need it to run at IDLE priority. Too bad BOINC does not permit one to configure client priority ... that is a BIG one they missed!

Actually, it would be useful to be able to configure, hour by hour of the day the priority ... between 10 pm to 6 am ... the clients could run at NORMAL ...

Thanks so much for your help

Mondo

P.S. Within a month or so ... some project members can say "The Hordes are coming" ... don't know if that will be in fear or glee :p

I guess it all depends on whether the observer is a member of a project that I choose or not ... and whether that observer is in front of me or behind me .... :p

I have proved that it is more than possible to overtake members with huge leads ... leads that I thought, at the time, were insurmountable. In any project that I choose to participate, I suspect that I, sooner or later, will be a force to be reckoned with ... and most probably, sooner rather than later ...

So I signed up for Rosetta@Home today...I was doing a little LHC@Home, but I had problems with lockups and the project running out of work. I like to concentrate on basically one DC project, so I had no other BOINC projects to run in the downtime...meaning my computer sat around waiting for work a lot, and not crunching anything :|

Ran Rosetta a few hours today, no ill effects to my box....but the project soon ran out of work, and now it's 'down for maintenance'

Is this typical of R@H???

Not in my experience. When TAS was doing Rosetta for October, we only had one downtime. And I think it was for the v5 server migration. Most of the time the project is pretty stable. But it is still new, so the track record is not that old yet.

I've only been running it for three days but this is the first time since I've started althought it was down for a little while right before I started.
David Baker the project head has stated it will not be a problem and that they will do what ever they have to ,right up to buying more servers if needed, to prevent server down time.

Baker and his group are very dedicated to the project. I am sure that if a new server or anything were needed, it would be done without hesitation. They really impress me. I just hope they stay that way. ;)

It's highly recommended to have atleast one "backup"-project, this is especially true for LHC@Home that knows there will be gaps with no available work.

In BOINC it's very easy to setup Einstein@home and SETI@Home as "backup"-projects, just set resource-share to 1 for these projects, and set your main project to 1000 or 10000 or something. With these settings you'll crunch a couple wu for Einstein and Seti initially, how many depends on your cache-setting, but when these initial wu is finished you will not download any more work except if your main project is down and computer otherwise would have an idle cpu.

I added PrimeGrid.com as a secondary, giving them both 50% Seems to work like a charm. No downtime when one is not giving units the other is.

Could use a some help with PrimeGrid too.

Another version of BOINC released, v 5.2.7, they're churning out these updates like there's no tomorrow :)

Changes since 5.2.6
Localization updates.
Usability enhancements.
Fix a crash condition when connecting to a remote machine.
Fix for file handle usage on Linux which caused BOINC to run out of file handles.
