Okay, I got my solution. If anyone dares try to steal my idea of compressing a piece of paper and paperclip into an ultra tight ball and launching it from an air cannon I will be very pissed. (Note, I am not going to attempt this, so feel free to use this as a solution for distance).

Alternately, if I drop a piece of paper from someplace really high up, can that count as distance traveled?

There's no rule against either of those.

Since it's going to be an ATOT vote though, I have no idea if "max distance" is really going to get the votes or not.

My prototype failed. I wish we could mix and match our 8.5" x 11" piece of paper. I need a little part of my "plane" to be sturdy. Back to the drawing boards.

Actually back to doing homework. I wasted way too much time on this.

Hah! I'm putting one of my paperclips on the railroad tracks & turning it into foil. I'm then going to use the chemicals from carefully burning a small section of the paper, in conjunction with some of the foil, to produce a very small battery. The other paperclip will be heated, stretched, and magnetized. I figure that I should be able to make a small battery & motor this way, good for a few hundred yards of flight.

Well, HomeBrewerDude was supposed to post pictures of his first creative attempt, but that appears to be on hold for now.

To get the ball rolling, here's a creative attempt :p
(Yes, additional materials were used, so it's not an engineering entry)

Ok, nothing too imaginative here...

Except there's a pilot

And we all know how dangerous being a test pilot can be... so he's prepared

... and possibly sponsored by Walmart

Crazy youtube video
(including needless playing with video effects and adding in of music from youtube's library... based on youtube's own recommendation for the video... still processing as of the time I'm posting this)

Ok, and I suppose I have to give an explanation...

Well, I thought "how about doing two flying vehicles in one?"
That led to an idea of a parachute / ejection from the plane... but who would fly it?
I thought about having AgentBolt take the controls, but Pedobear seemed a more universal image, especially since he'll be making worldwide appearances at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Hopefully his sponsorship with Walmart makes it through and he can do an aerial lighting of the Olympic torch for the opening ceremonies. Cross your fingers!

Does it have to fly or can it just work in theory?

Can I use glue?

Can I use A4 paper (no letter size paper over here)?

Can I whine some more?

For the engineering challenge, it should be 8.5"x11".
If you don't have access to that size paper, make the area no larger than 93.5 in^2

No glue for the engineering version.

Yes, you can whine more.

Ok, weekend engineers.... get to it!

I tried to make a rubber band powered plane for the creative challenge and I'm failing miserably :(

An attempt at powered flight...

Materials used (creative challenge)
- Two 8.5" x 11" pieces of paper
- Three paper clips
- One ball point pen
- One rubber band
- Plastic packaging from a Logitech mouse
- Tape
- Hot Glue

(+ pilot materials)

The trickiest part... propeller attachment:

Explanation...

Since pedobear clearly was skilled at gliders, I thought I'd see how he performed with powered flight. He and I agree that getting "powered flight" to work seems like a more interesting challenge than the simple paper airplane competition. Maybe a future challenge will be rubber band powered vehicles (cars, boats, planes, etc.)

Using materials I had available, I attempted to do copy the design of those cheap balsa wood planes you can buy anywhere. Getting the propeller to turn (and making a reasonable propeller) was the hardest part. It still doesn't work that well... but it is what it is.

Blame HomeBrewerDude :p

Wait... you're not trying because of a lack of what?

Everything but the paper. I don't even have a place I can test without looking insane due to me currently living in a college dorm. So that means no camera or video camera either. As such yeah. :p

Oh and you look like you spent way to much time on those paper planes. :p

You're in a dorm, and you can't find two paperclips?

Also, you can tell them that you crazy friend from WI runs ridiculous contests... and that's why you're doing it. As one of the girls in the dorm to hold the camera for you.

That wont pass, I'm in WI... :p
But still have no way of recording and it's winter so its cold.
Oh and my lack of creativity means my plane wont go far and will in turn be ugly. :(

Ah I almost went deaf listening to xanis's video... he should have umm checked for high frequency sources/ noise... my ears are still ringing. :(

How about your crazy friend from Madison then?

You're clearly not being resourceful enough.

Hmmm yeah probably, but because this place isn't Madison some have envy of Madison since theres a better university there, so still wouldn't fly. Most everyone here is from WI as well, well besides the current exchange students. :p

But im still not creative and whatever design I would do for the other one would probably be based of something i found online... but yeah still no camera.

I'll bet you $1 that some girl on campus has both paperclips and a camera.

That is true but I keep to myself, most on the floor I'm on don't even know who I am probably. :p

Could actually use my web cam for a camera probably though if the software for it wasn't dumb. Still wouldn't show long distance motion though.

This is the perfect crazy icebreaker then :awe:

Uhhh... there's an engineering challenge with strict construction requirements.

I haven't submitted anything for that challenge.

The creative challenge is use whatever you want.
