Hi ATOT!

It's been about 6 months since I declared a "1 week break" from the weekly engineering challenge.
The old thread with past challenges and winners

Time to start it up again!

After consulting with HomeBrewerDude at the office today, the theme will be "Paper Airplanes"

Week 4 Engineering Category - "best" flying machine (Presented by YOyoYOhowsDAjello)

Materials:
One 8.5" x 11" piece of paper (I'm not specifying paper weight... use what you want)
Two #1 smooth paper clips (optional) (I'm hoping this is a standard type... if not, just use some that are about 1.25" long)

Paperclips.jpg

Goal:
Built the "best" flying machine out of those materials.
Due to the difficulty in providing a standard way of measuring performance, I'm leaving this intentionally vague in the hopes that ATOT's creative minds will come up with compelling arguments as to why their machine has the "best" performance.
Does it have an impressive flight time? Does it fly very far? Does it spiral well? You come up with the criteria. Maybe in a subsequent challenge we can pick a particular standard measure.

Rules:
Your flying machine can consist of only the materials above (a single sheet of 8.5" x 11" paper, two #1 smooth paper clips).
You may cut / split / modify those materials, but the final machine can only consist of those original materials.
You do not need to use the full piece of paper, or any paperclips.
You may "launch" your flying machine with the method of your choice. It does not need to be a hand launch.

To submit:
You must provide a VIDEO of a complete flight of your flying machine from launch to landing.
You must provide AT LEAST 3 PICTURES of your flying machine from different angles so we can observe its construction.
You must provide a Written or Video explanation of your design and an argument for why it is the "best" flying machine.

How will a winner be determined?
If there are 10 or less participants, I will make a new thread where we can vote on the winner with a vbulletin poll. If there are more than 10 participants, the new thread will not include a poll, and voters will just vote by "write-in" for the submitters.

Week 4 Creative Category - "most creative" flying machine (Presented by YOyoYOhowsDAjello)

Materials:
One 8.5" x 11" piece of paper (I'm not specifying paper weight... use what you want)
Two #1 smooth paper clips (optional) (I'm hoping this is a standard type... if not, just use some that are about 1.25" long)
Whatever other decorative / construction materials you want.

Goal:
Build something that can "fly" that is totally awesome.
You are encouraged to decorate to your heart's content.
Create a flying machine that will appeal to the voters of ATOT, who will decide your fate.

Rules:
The spirit of this competition is to have a creative version of the paper flight theme.
Your contraption should contain the paper as a building material, but feel free to go nuts on this. Add in whatever other decoration materials you desire.
In your video, your contraption should have some sort of characteristics that resemble "flight". Maybe it's just a parachute or something... I don't know. Just make if float or glide a bit or something...

To submit:
You must provide a VIDEO of a complete flight of your flying machine from launch to landing.
You must provide AT LEAST 3 PICTURES of your flying machine from different angles so we can observe its construction.
You must provide a Written or Video explanation of your design and an argument for why it is the "most creative" flying machine.

How will a winner be determined?

Contest is over, Poll results here

Timeline for both competitions:

Start time: Tuesday 1pm February 9th, 2010 (Central Time)

Polls will be posted: Sunday February 21st, 2010 (some time during the day... submit your entry by noon central time)

(You have about 2 weeks to make your entries for this "Week 4" competition... since you had no warning on this one)

Winners will be declared:
Tuesday 1pm February 23rd, 2010 (Central Time)
EDIT: Polls close 2:45pm instead of 1pm.

Other information:

What do I win?
You mean recognition and pride from this isn't enough? Maybe I'll think of something better, but I'll plan on sending out an "official ATOT challenge winner" certificate by e-mail or actual mail (if you send me your address) to weekly winners.

You also win the honor of picking next week's challenge!
(If you win, PM me the details for the next challenge and I'll set it up)
If you decline this honor, I'll pick another lame idea.

Any questions? Post here!

Too much work.

Wait, so I can launch it using rubber band? As long as the plane doesn't have any foreign materials on it right?

Yes, you can launch it with a rubber band.

What part is too much work?
I assume the video + pictures?
Without that is seems like it would be difficult to have a competition like this?

plane is going to be a pain in the ass to acuratley record the values. I have school anyways so I can not participate. sorry

btw the awards just look funny, cause no one else won any and only ur name is there

How much time is this really going to take?
I think the penny tower experiment was a lot more time consuming than this will be.

I also feel that recording specifics of the flight would be difficult, which is why this competition doesn't require any numerical measurements.

The Boston Dangler won the vertical post-it note competition!

Extend the deadline... too soon.

How long do we need?

This started off as a "weekly challenge", which I actually hope to keep going again.

It seemed to work well enough for the other challenges.

Should this turn into a bi-weekly challenge?

Make this first one last two weeks, then the future ones last a week. People need to prepare for it if they are interested in doing it. For future ones, they will know they are coming, but this one just got sprung on them.

Ok, that sounds reasonable :)

I just found my childhood book in my library entitled "world's greatest paper airplanes." How could I possibly lose?

I think have a good design for this. Can I video the launch in my apartment? I'm in the midst of a snowstorm and I don't think that I'll be able to get outside to fly it. :p

There are no requirements at all about where the flight has to occur.

i don't have enough space to do this, but its not that hard to make a ~20 second plane if you have a large enough indoor space. maybe i'll try to think of some other measure...hmm

What if we don't have access to military spy satellites & thus lack the ability to track the progress of our flying machine as it travels for several miles?

i.e. the video camera only tracks it for the first 100 yards or so.

solution: attach a gps tracker :D
lose some range due to payload, but you will be able to track it

Easy, just buy a remote controlled plane with live video feed and follow it.

Okay, I got my solution. If anyone dares try to steal my idea of compressing a piece of paper and paperclip into an ultra tight ball and launching it from an air cannon I will be very pissed. (Note, I am not going to attempt this, so feel free to use this as a solution for distance).

Alternately, if I drop a piece of paper from someplace really high up, can that count as distance traveled?
