As readers here might already know, I've been in a years long battle with the raccoons. Hit the treadmill you porky, little rodents. I've gone so far as to use blow gun, "stun" darts from the second (really 1.5) story window. For those not familiar, a stun dart is just a blunt plastic dart, although some are "enhanced" with a steel slug. Haven't used those.
So here is some dope on raccoon behavior. If one has become adapted to finding food at a particular location, they will frequent that place, but not indefinitely. After a certain number of sequential disappointments, they may subsequently only return periodically.
We are now at that point - which may be one of a crucial inflection. The cat kibble doesn't seem to have an easily detectable odor. So for the first week or so, I distributed kibble around the front and side of the house but only at night. The cats know their territory so they are constantly on "patrol." Not so much for the raccoons.
Unfortunately, the morning feeding only survives for maybe 3 to 4 hours once the starlings, jays, woodpeckers and their ilk get involved. And some of the kitties didn't seem to get the memo. So there's a ledge above the food bowl created with an old redwood picnic seat (no legs). It's about 2.5 feet above the porch platform. On that, I've place a secondary paper bowl.
Tonight I will be watching to see if any of the raccoons figure this out.
