The last holdouts of folks with real phones is for their alarms. It seems that most require wired service down here

Yeah I specifically went with wireless, figured if someone cuts my line before going in, there's still a good chance of the alarm going off. Now if they know what they're doing they'll use a RF jammer but that's still not guarantee. Ideally I wanted one that does both but they didn't have that option. Maybe new one will though, if it can do internet/IP and cell that would be ideal.
 
Looks like they must be programming it now, getting weird emails from ADT like carbon monoxide detecting high levels.

Feeling a little sleepy thing I'll go for a nap.
 
I don't know if it's my system or just a case of bad luck but had like 4 USB sticks acting as bad in a row. I found a tool that lets you put a windows ISO on a USB stick and lets you boot from it and it keeps failing so I put the sticks in Linux and tried to zero them out and they all failed.

Stick #5 seems to be good so far.... zeroing flash is normally not a good idea but figured it's a good way to test that all "sectors" are good.

Where are you buying usb sticks? Back of a truck? I haven't had a single usb stick failure...

Never either until now. Not sure what is going on. I don't recall where I bought these, probably Tigerdirect or NCIX back in the day just to have them on hand. I recall there being a sale and I wanted to have a bunch of 8GB sticks on hand for Linux ISOs or for handing files to people where I don't expect the stick back. They are Adata not sure if that's considered a good brand or not.

Maybe I just got lucky with the first few I used and now I'm hitting bad ones.

A sledgehammer is not the right tool for this.
 
I find CNC laser cutter is more precise. Hit the bad flash sectors directly on the chip.

But yeah guess it was just a case of bad luck to get 4 bad sticks in a row, this 5th one seems to be ok.

Either way this is still less trouble than burning a CD lol.
 
I have lots of USB flash drives go bad. It's like saying that you've never had a hard drive go bad or a motherboard go bad. It happens. They're electronics.
 
Come to think of it I've been pretty lucky with hard drives. *touch wood* Had a couple die on me here and there but they were raid so no big deal. In the early days I had non raid ones fail and that is a huge pain having to restore everything. That's why I only do raid now for mass storage. Still have backups.

Speaking of hard drives I wonder if this sound I'm hearing from this laptop is not a fan but actually the hard drive. If that's the case I'm surprised it even let me copy files off it. 😱 That's some serious bad bearings.

Gonna install windows 8 and see how far that goes. I feel dirty doing that. Not my choice.

RAID is not backup.
 
Ugh forgot about needing a keygen when it comes to Windows installations. Guess I'll make a temporary VM for that... lot of those have viruses.

Wish people would not throw out the stuff that comes with their computer, it would make my life so much easier.
 
I have found its best to research individual models and find something that lasts a long time. I didnt learn about IBM Deskstars until it was too late.
 
Ugh I'm so behind in the world of piracy. I don't even know what to trust.

I forgot how tedious Windows reinstalls are. It's why I got out of that. Too much time spent for so little reward.
 
Screw it. He's getting Windows 10. That one didn't ask for a key, think it's embedded in the system since it's OEM. It's also technically legal this way.
