So Mint 19 failed to even start the installer. But I had this thought to try turning machine off completely then plug second monitor then try booting in Kubuntu and that seems to actually work. Still weird though as you're normally suppose to be able to hot plug HDMI. But yeah seems to work... so I'll stick with this OS. It dying overnight was probably power settings, I disabled all of that.

Kinda bummed though I thought KDE had way more advanced options for multi monitor, I see nothing. For example it would be nice for task bar to only show windows that are open on the current screen, or to make workspaces independent of monitor. I see no options to do any of that. Oh well I guess I'm asking for too much. Even Windows can't do any of that.

I dont keep up with the Fast and Furious, cuz it looks fucking stupid. But I was digging around on IMDB looking at other things and noticed Gal Gadot was in one of them, long before she became Wonder Woman.

It's 2pm I should probably eat something.

Going to be spending most of the day configuring everything like file shares, bookmarks, email, ftp etc... so much to do. At least I'll have a newer OS though. I was procrastinating upgrading since it's such a huge process but this kind of forced me to.

Ming chewed through the power cord on the answering machine, again. Fortunately, for Ming, it's only 6V and won't hurt him. Unfortunately, for us, it's only 6V and won't kill him.

Got stuff more or less setup on my new install now. At least for every day apps. I will probably run into stuff I want to change as I start doing more actual work.

Seems Banshee and most other music players aren't compatible with this newer distro, which is weird. Not a big priority but I will have to find one. I even wonder if there is a web based one then I can set it up on a server. Eventually want to do that with my email too. I've been carrying around the same Thunderbird profile from like early 2000's or whenever Thunderbird was at version 1. I'm surprised it even still works, I guess when it loads it might rebuild it, so as long as I kept doing it it just kept compatibility I guess.

Couple weird quircks I still need to figure out like back button not doing what I want in the file manager, and also single clicking opening files is super annoying and can't find a setting for that either.

At the end of the day I'm just happy to be way more ahead than I was yesterday. Think it's time to wind down and play some UT.

Funny enough for me I never felt anything lol. Well there is a bit of a tingle but it's so subtle it's hard to tell if it's just the taste of the metal.
huh. I definitely had enough of a zap to:
never fall for that again
and try to dare someone else

One time my boy chewed and ruined the cable for my Cherry keyboard. Somehow he lived through the choking (me of him; think Homer v. Bart). From then on, I slather on habanero sauce on all my dangling keyboard cables.

Speaking of the devil... I was trying to get him to look up at the camera. He must have been chewing on something. Now, where's that cpu?

@IronWing My boy has a bad habit of chewing through cables. But I noticed it was those small cables. The bigger the cable the less he wants to chew it. Seagate had cheapest external cases, where they cut cost by moving ac/dc adapter to a wall wart and with that a tiny cable. I was so afraid to leave it unattended while I was copying data to it. I recently bought a handful of USB 3.1 Gen 2 cables. A good cable makes all the difference. They're usually thicker too. Imagine that.

I just realized, Kubuntu 20.04 was released literally yesterday. When I went to download it I must have caught it right as it got released. Had no idea it was THAT new, I just went for latest version. That actually makes me feel better about some of the quirks I'm finding, hopefully these are just bugs that will get fixed.

Got home around 5pm from a two-day road trip. Went to Texarkana and back. Took pics of 11 towns. Four of them are county seats I hadn't gone to previously. So, my grand total now stands at 211 Texas counties. Updated as of 04-24-2020

Considering the minimum amount of setup I have to do Linux has sure come a long way for desktop. There's always going to be room for improvement, but even Windows has lot of really annoying quircks at times.

The 8GB memory module was awaiting me on my doorstep when I got home yesterday. Popped it in the server. Took a few reboots and everything was stable. Bios was giving me a CPU fan error. Weird.

Well this sucks. Thought my system was running ok.... locked up overnight. 2nd time in a row it does that. I thought the 1st time was because I forgot to disable power save stuff, I find it does not matter the OS, that stuff never works properly and half the time the system just locks up but it's disabled and it was locked on the desktop. Even clock stopped. Not only did it lock up but it like reset everything. All my firefox cookies are gone and I have to login to everything again, and for whatever reason ublock stopped working.

Uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox so at least that's working properly again.

Still not too impressed if I'll have to turn off my computer every night because of it locking up. :/

Sounds to me like you have a hardware issue somewhere. Perhaps it could be xorg acting up. I've occasionally had issues where the display would be frozen, and dropping to the terminal via alt-F2 then back to desktop via alt-F7(These may be ubuntuisms, and won't necessarily work on all distros) would wake it back up.

Hoping not, this is brand new, well the GPU is. The rest was from my mining rig so it's still fairly modern and was working fine. Though it was not running a GUI... The old motherboard was problematic, it would not accept most add on GPUs so I just switched to this other board which is ASUS. Sticking to ASUS from now on, I seem to always have issues going with other brands.

Now idea where to even begin troubleshooting this. I can't afford to order more parts.

I hope it ends up being a bug that's fixed shortly. Hardly finding anything on google or any forums though so it's not a good sign.

And yeah the alt keys would not have worked. Numlock light was not even going on/off when I pressed it. That's a good indication of a hard lockup.

Checkout proprietary drivers. The *buntus have a program that'll check for available proprietary drivers. Can't remember what it's called, but should be somewhere in the settings menu. See if offers you something interesting.
