The standard is either 24" or 16" on center ... One would think you could buy an attic ladder to fit either one ...
No way , Ray , U can't find one with a ~14" width anywhere !

( anyone interested in developing one can make a million )

(( just call it the 14" Crypto Attic Ladder and make it a Billion ! ))
 
I found a ( hunting ) tree stand with a 12" ladder - on closeout sale at Menard's for only $34.95and they had 5 in stock !
Drove out there with the Wife and the clerk said "We packed them on a pallet weeks ago and sent them to the warehouse ! He did check the computer and pointed out where they were.
Bummer
So I bought a telescoping ladder and figured it would have to do , using it sideways is not Ideal , but ...
 
I had to drop the wife off the next day at Her Vampires Office to do a blood draw , drove .5 miles to Walmart and there on the shelves was a tree stand with a 14" wide ladder - on closeout sale for only $30 ! Used the lower 2 of 3 ladder sections for a perfect fit !
And I've got all kinds of spare parts with it !
