Time for an ssd. They don't make any noises at all. They just one day quit working without warning :^POne of my drives is beginning to make the ugly noise when reading. Maybe time for a new one.
Yea, that would worry me also. It's hard to beat the cost/gb of spinners. Disk io probably isn't a huge deal on home(even your home :^P) servers.I'd kinda love to start using SSDs for mass storage as they would be really fast, but I hate the fact that they die based on wear. I push quite a lot of I/O because I have lot of VMs and raw data and it gets backed up often. I don't want to have to worry about how much writes I do.
