I can draw up three worst-case scenarios.
1) Processor degradation. Due to the processor being at least 18 months old, and having spent much of its lifespan running a 4.0/4.2T, at moderately high voltage, it may have suffered damage. This could leave it unstable now, creating errors throughout the system as the memory controller disintegrates. I have not run testing to confirm this hypothesis.
2) SSD degradation. It is a two-year-old early adopter OCZ Summit, and I don't know much about the lifespan of SSD's (nobody does really, do they?), but it is possible that it is falling apart. This would easily explain the general system slowdown.
3) Power supply quality control failure. The PSU has been squealing from the first day of SLI, and hasn't stopped. It's clearly a flawed unit, but it hasn't caused any shutdowns. This is the lowest on the list, although the squealing is fucking infuriating.
Anyways, short form is, for now, the OS is toast. Virus, malware, or just error-induced corruption, the thing needs to be wiped. The SSD probably should get wiped out at the same time.
