Anyone have a good way of testing what people's work ethic and standards for good work looks like?

There's not a surefire way. In IT, we always want to hear thought process rather than the right or wrong answer. You should make scenario-based interview questions and see how people respond.

As part of the interview for her current job, my wife was given a big article pertaining to her line of work and she was to read and summarize it and bring the summary to the interview for discussion.

Hmm Okay I'll think of something.

I want to do something like draw a house. Not to see how good their artistic abilities are but to see what their attention to detail looks like.

Ok, ask them something like "Tell me the steps to make a sandwich" or something like that and see what level of detail they go into.

Good idea.

I should set up 3 parts to the interview.

1) home prep. Like design a brochure
2) Tell me steps to make a sandwich
3) Presentation on them self

(We give presentations)

Moral dilemma question, no right answer, just look at how long they take to respond and if the response is rational. If they respond too fast...

Jack: Don’t you ever google yourself?
Tracy: Sure I google myself all the time. Like when Angie’s not in the mood or I’m alone in a hotel.
Jack: Tracy, you do know that googling yourself means looking yourself up on the interney.
Tracy: I did not know that. That explains why Liz Lemon was so cool the other day.
[Flashback]
Tracy: Liz Lemon, you mind if I Google myself in your office?
Liz: Sure, Tracy.
Tracy: Can I use your computer?
Liz: How else are you going to do it?

If it is someone I consider a potential candidate I will become pushy and see how they handle that.

I usually had long interview questions written down, with diagrams, and let them read them and answer them. Many told me I was brutal.
