Because it's an Infiniti? So it has 280 HP, 280 ft-lbs, RWD/AWD mixed mode drive, a solid and fast 5AT, extremely stable handling, a boat anchor for a brake system, a durable interior (108k, yet the only wear visible was some loose threads at 9 and 3 on the wheel), a luxurious interior (leather, Bose, sunroof, wood accents on jet black), and VERY mechanically reliable. It's as reliable as any car out there, despite being a high performing luxury car.

Because I figure despite those miles, I can get five years out of it without a major problem, which will put me out of school, hopefully employed, and therefore looking for a newer car because I love fast cars.

I probably will keep looking though, because that 90%+ certainty the car would be fine just isn't enough for my doubting mind.

I know, ICF, you and I have wildly different ideas on cars. For you, it's A to B. For me, it's A to B in the most spirited, quickest, and fun way possible. And for me, a G35x will do that better than almost anything else in that price range, while being more reliable than almost anything else in that price range.

You'd seriously be better off spending less on something with less mileage that is highly reliable and then splurge after you graduate and get a job. Do you have any idea how much it costs to repair cars like that?

No, I couldn't. Well, I could. I could get a Corolla with 30k, but I'd shoot myself first. Remember, I may have a low budget, and a need for a fairly reliable car, but I like driving, I like fast and fun cars. Ergo, the trade is mileage.

This car is fun?

Actually, yeah. Not a whole lot, because they don't break all that much, and short of blowing a transmission into shrapnel, it'll break fewer parts than my GP. Yearly maintenance costs are a shade higher, because the brakes will require replacement more often, but that's about it.

This is not a BMW. It doesn't fall apart as soon as it reaches 50k miles. It is not an infamous European gremlin-plagued little monster.

I absolutely respect your opinion, ICF, and I'm glad to have the input, but an Infiniti is not a maintenance nightmare. There's an I30t in the garage at home, with 180k miles on it. It's had... oh, one transmission fluid flush, one wheel bearing hub, two mufflers, I think tie rods, and that's it for repairs. Brakes, wipers, oil... that's all maintenance, and that's a cost for any car.

Is it a lucky car? Maybe. Did it get 160k of its 180k sheltered in a garage with an experienced mechanic as its primary driver/caretaker? Yes. Is it still clearly a reliable car? Yes.

Same for you, alfa, I do appreciate your opinion too.

But a NA four cylinder is slower than pretty much anything with six cylinders. And I don't do slow. Also, I tried a manual, it wasn't fun, I don't want one as my DD.

A Honda does nothing for me. And I'm willing to bet a Mazda size-equivalent vehicle will outhandle a Honda.

If that G35x had only had 15-20k fewer miles, it'd already be at home. It's that last year or two worth of mileage that makes me skeptical.

If I hit 200K, that would be 2 to 3 more years. After that, if it is still in OK shape, I may go for 250K. My wife will be so mad.

My Grand Prix sits at 134***. It is unlikely to reach 150K, even with significant repairs (new spark plugs, new electronic modules, new FSB, new rear springs/struts, new mufflers). If it even made it past that, it wouldn't make 200K before the floor boards will probably have fallen out.

It spent many many years parked on a main thoroughfare through a city, which likely exposed it to higher amounts of salt and sand and ice than most cars ever see.

That's the difference -- mine has always lived in a garage except for parking lot time at past jobs. But I've worked here for 4.5 years and it has been garaged at work that entire time as well.

So, by the end of the week, it will be September and we still don't have any conclusive news about Bulldozer. WTF?!?! I am seriously considering just getting BF3 for my Xbox and not doing a PC upgrade.

Yeah, that's enough to make the difference for why mine is falling apart, and you are seriously entertaining thoughts of 200k.

Now my car gets to live in a suburban town in a driveway or occasionally in a garage, so its longevity has been improved.

And inside that garage I occasionally have my car in, there is enough equipment to do nearly anything. We've even done an engine change here. About the only impossible activities are things that involve computer changing or welding.
