So let's assume I will have $600 in Amazon points by the time I build (I think I am at $550 or thereabouts now). $220 for an i5 and $200 for a board will leave me enough for a power supply and a decent chunk of a graphic card.

It is a tough call whether I need it or not. I'd say that it probably isn't "essential" but it would be helpful.

I wouldn't build now if I had to spend significant out-of-pocket money to do it. So far I've bought RAM and an SSD, and both were purchased because if I decide not to go with a new build, I can utilize them elsewhere.
