Motherboard manufacturers for all of the main PCs I've built (in order): Intel, FIC, Abit, Abit, MSI, Asus

Other systems I've built (servers, HTPCs, 2nd and 3rd PCs): Gigabyte (x2), ECS (x2), Biostar (x2), Foxconn

If I end up with an Intel rig, overclocking is probably the most important aspect. The Z68 boards all pretty much have the other features I want.

The Gigabyte board with the 20 GB SSD for caching intrigues me but I am not sure I want to pay that much and I'd need to research to see if I can have that cache the data drive, which will be one or more spindles. I doubt it will help to cache the OS SSD. :D

How long have you had your current motherboard? Two years?

Nearly 3.5 years, but honestly, I'd wager a mid-range Gigabyte of that time period would've given me about the same OC. The other features of the Rampage aren't things I really used. The "special" sound card it came with? No big deal. Second NIC? Not currently used but I assumed I'd move it to a server role at some point.

I'd like to see if Gigabyte would certify the Rampage to work with their 16 GB DDR-2 kit. For that matter, I should ask them if the Gigabyte board in my server is certified to work with it. When that kit was released it would allegedly work in most P35 boards.

Rampage is bleeding edge, gaming/overclocking. It's a waste.

That being said, $300 for a 3.5 year motherboard is an easy call. Get a board that has all the features you want, and think you are very likely to want/use during the next 3+ years. Ignore the prices, find the right board, and then check your CC statement in a month. :p

Also, Gigabyte FTW. If they weren't sickly blue, I might never own another company's board.

I currently have every other Friday off. Wednesday off isn't something I'd like.

Wednesday off isn't as cool as Fridays, but it's actually pretty neat. You basically have two workweeks, it's really easy.

Of course, I'm an hourly guy doing a job that could almost be replaced by a monkey. If I'm not here doing something, someone else will be in doing the work. Not the same for you.

At the time, it was the best reviewed board and I wanted to splurge on a good system because I was getting married in a few months and wasn't sure I'd be able to easily get one so soon after that. :D

I'd like to do the entire build for whatever my Amazon rewards balance is at the time. That's why I am considering dropping down to the i5-2500K -- that is a $100 savings over the 2600K and that would buy a new PS or go towards a new graphic card.

They have black ones now.
