When a force gets loaded on the bed laterally, it's going to put the stress entirely on the bolt. The full-sized leg defuses some of that onto the bed frame.

2-3" might work, then again, it might not. I wouldn't use it.

Why are you doing this? Right now, you have 30 square feet or so of storage under your bed. If you do this, you'll have nothing.

I hate how it looks. Plus lower bed makes the transition to the floor easier and faster

My favorite idea is leaving it alone and just putting a bedskirt on it to hide the appearance.

Failing that, I'd use wood blocks, such as 4x4's. High compressive strength.
