Alright, attempt #2 at reloading my phone. Posted on Crackberry forums and someone pointed me to an alternative reloader download.

I need to figure out a way to get security updates though, I hate that they just stop issuing them because the phone is only a few years old. I'm sure there must be a way to spoof to the google server that it's a newer phone then I will get pushed the proper updates. I'm still getting regular app updates so why not get security too, makes no sense that they separate it.

Good news! This rom worked. It's at the welcome screen now so I need to setup the google account and all that, then import my contacts back.

I will still need to consider a new phone, but from what I'm reading this whole thing where they stop security updates after a few years is a very common thing with android... I don't want to spend money on a new phone only to be back to square one in a few years from now. So I need to figure out what I want to do. Maybe join the dark side and go Apple. I wonder if custom roms are a better option too maybe they update those for longer.

I could justify paying more if I know it will last me longer though. Like I paid around $300 for my DTEK50 and it only lasted me a few years until they cut off security updates, so if a $600 phone will last longer then it's justifiable long term. There's a new one coming soon that is available for preorder, by buying as soon as it comes out I would hope I would get a good 5+ years of updates.

Are those better for lasting longer as far as updates go? Last I checked they are expensive though.
Nexus get at least two year update from when they first become available. That is firmware, security update is three years.

Hmm that's still kind of crap. I don't get why they are so short lived. This stuff should be illegal imo, it's blatant planned obsolescence and horrible for the environment.

The manufactures have to test updates to make sure they don't bork the system. They only usually support for two years. If you can find support on xda, then maybe you can flash a custom rom on your old device. Hardware changes. Can't expect them to support it forever.

It's weird they even need to be involved though. Dell, IBM, HP etc don't really have to be involved in the Windows Update process. I can install Windows on a 10 year old machine and still be able to update it. It might not run well but it will run. It sounds like the whole phone ecosystem is a huge mess.

And yeah I am looking into custom roms, it sounds like that may be a way around this issue. Just need to find one compatible with my phone, or buy a new phone that I know one will be compatible with. My phone is kinda oddball and not that popular so a custom rom may not work on it but if I do end up buying a new one I can make sure it is compatible with a custom one. At that point I'd even be willing to splurge on a flashship phone if I know I will have it for 5+ years.

And hardware breaks. Phones get dropped a lot and do wear out. You also have incredible thermals in a small space. And standards do change. Three years is max for me. I use for so much stuff.

That's the thing, if it was the hardware that is worn or broken etc from use it would be one thing, but the hardware it perfectly fine. Hate to throw out something just because the way they structure updates is crap. I don't get why they can't just fix security issues too with regular updates. I mean, I do get regular updates so it's not like they completely stopped supporting that version of Android. Why pick and choose which ones I get just send the security ones too, cut out the middle man and have it come all from the play store. Which is what I thought happened before this.

From sounds of it, custom roms solve this issue though so I may need to look at that route for my next phone, I will make sure to choose a phone that has known support for custom roms.
