You've got to be freaking kidding me. A 10+ hour long partition resize ended in an error and the whole thing got cancelled. Something about dos limitations, WTF this is Linux. Looks like I'll be deleting the partition and recreating it. It's just a backup drive anyway. It's a 3TB drive and for whatever reason the partition is 2TB. No idea how that happened but I only noticed now because the drive got full so fast.

So it turns out you can't create a partition bigger than 2TB in Linux, I didn't figure it had 1999esque limitations like that. For my raid arrays I've been formatting the entire logical volume so that's how I've been getting away with it, but not sure if you can do that with bare drives and even if I can it will mess up my backup scripts as they assume there is a partition. Well this blows. Looks like I can't have backup drives bigger than 2TB.

So have to set partition to "GPT" then it let me do it. Don't know why it can't do that by default if you try to make a partition bigger than 2TB. Turns out fdisk can't do that and you have to use parted, which is super unintuitive and absolutely not user friendly. You're expected to just punch in numbers. How am I suppose to know what to put? Thankfully was still able to use gparted after finding out about the GPT thing. Thank God for X forwarding. Stupid that there is no viable command line tool for managing partitions bigger than 2TB though, what is this 1999?

Now to rerun a huge backup job from scratch...

Hopefully my backup drive does not overheat and melt the drive dock. I've had that happen before lol. Had to add a fan but then that dock eventually died, and never added the fan to the new one.
