Can people eat, sleep, shower, watch entertainment, go for a swim, exercise, go to casino, gym, fine restaurant, visit a physician, play games (arcade/computer/poker etc.)...the list goes on and on! In your car?
To do all that on land each person generates far more waste and uses far more energy - then they would onboard.

In the month I've been looking for snow tires, TireRack has pushed the availability date of one type from mid-November to end of December.
Continental ExtremeWinterContact, 12/31/11. The tread is directional, and I'm concerned about my car's negative camber as related to that tread. It'll be a few months before the tires would be available, which means driving in the winter with my all seasons. Their other weak point is testing poorly in dry braking on TireRack - it seems as though it doesn't fit in though.
Blizzak WS-70. Available immediately. They're amazing for traction on wet, ice, and snow... for the first half of their tread. After that, the underlying material is all season rubber. They wear fast for that first half, and then they're effectively dead after that. The tread wear time/mileage is probably similar between the two tires, since the Blizzak is known to wear fast, but they start at 12/32, whereas the Contis start at 10/32. Remember 6/32 is the end for all snow tires.
The other problem with Blizzak is that they don't like to drive on clear road, lots of tread squirm, and they have a lot of tread noise.

Tires...just a piece of rubber shaped to form a semi fluid tight aerostatic membrane semi-mechanically attached to a rim bolted to a hub in which holds up the frame. 2) Something nerds talk about when all they need to do is inflate to sidewall with 73% nitrogen.
Now if they made 'em clear with a more anti permeable compound they could be filled with neon. Tire flexing upon the road generates an enormous amount of electrostatic potential. With a metal rim the neon gas would be in a constant ionized state. Can you say aurora borealis in a tube? Mr. Geissler would be duly impressed!

With further consideration... I still don't think LM or Alpin's are a good option, I get too damn much snow for that.
Also, I've put 750 miles on the car in 3.5 weeks. Yes, that'll probably drop off, especially as it gets cold out (and therefore miserable to just walk outside and cruise away), but it still indicates by the end of the year I could be talking over 2000 miles.
That's a staggering figure for me, someone who usually puts on about 9-10k in a whole year, and then 50% of it during 3.5 months of summer.
Also, I've put 750 miles on the car in 3.5 weeks. Yes, that'll probably drop off, especially as it gets cold out (and therefore miserable to just walk outside and cruise away), but it still indicates by the end of the year I could be talking over 2000 miles.

Blizzak WS-70 sounds bad on highway, and squirms nastily for handling and speed deflection, but on ice and snow, they're wonderful. The estimate for the upper magic layer is about 12-15k miles, then they drop way off.
If I keep driving 2000+ in 3 months, that's gonna make for a short life to these tires, not even three full seasons. But since my A/S tires should have quite a bit of life left, I can run them until snowfall, and then change over to Blizzaks. The Blizzaks will be dismal on clear road, which is honestly the majority of what I'll see around here, and atrocious during January's 1000 mile highway marathon, but if/when it snows, especially if it turns out to be another brutal winter like last year, they'll be fantastic.
And as soon as I think snowfall is done, swap back for A/S.
Although I'd rather sell the A/S with moderate life left, and go buy myself a set of 18x8 wheels and some nice summer rubber, I don't think that's going to be financially viable. Also, I don't know how to do the transition for that. Summer tires would rather not be under 50 F or so, Blizzaks wear fast on dry warm pavement, where warm is above freezing. So I'd have a couple months of the year where neither tire is happy.
