The Cosmos case in stock form has horrible internal temperatures. The engineers? were more worried about aesthetics than performance with that one. If you want cooling performance go with a HAF case, bottom line.
The original Cosmos was bad, but the Cosmos S was improved quite a bit. At any rate, I am not buying a new case untl my next rig (if there is a next one, that is). I am getting too old for this stuff and if I do get a new system in a few years, maybe I'll go prebuilt or with a laptop.
I don't need a 5 Ghz CPU; a moderate OC is OK with me.
The Hydro coolers from Corsair are weak and the cooler the air you can get to the radiator the better. This is why they instruct the end user to mount the fan backwards pulling air from the outside.
They get very good reviews and compare pretty favorably with the higher-end air coolers at lower prices. That's what you guys are missing -- I didn't get it so I could go around and say "I have water cooling!" I got it because I needed another cooler and wasn't about to pay $90 for the Noctua DH-14. If I really wanted a water cooling setup, I'd do a proper one; right now, I am after bang for the buck in cooling performance. I personally think it is insane to spend money on a major water cooling system.
And yeah, I had planned to mount the fan as you mention above. I think that is the best way to go.
Keep it below 4GHz and you should be fine. Then again if you're not loading the CPU 101% 24/7 it may not be a problem. Depends on how cool the ambient is as well.
Yeah, you're right -- I am probably OK even with the current performance. However, I need another HSF anyway for my old rig so I decided if I am going to buy one, I might as well buy a new one for the new box and put the Xigmatek with the old box. I just hope it fits into the case.
