update:

Ended up going to Tony Lukes and it was tasty. The cab fare was $50 which made the trip not really worth it but I am glad I went. I waited in line for 5 mins, and after the cab ride and going back through security I still had 2 and 1/2 hrs to kill.


I am flying to Florida in the middle of the month and I have a 3hr 21m layover in Philly. I have been to Philly before so this layover needs to accomplish one thing, and one thing only. I want to grub.

Any really good places close to the airport to grab something to eat?

Oh, believe me! The TSA guys over there are like Nazi's. It'll take you an hour just to get back in. Everyone knows this.
 
If you are seriously going to leave the airport and try and get food might as well go to Reading Terminal Market - there's a million selections there and it's pretty quick. A lot of the places have been featured on TV.

If you had more time I'd suggest some restaurants to sit down at but don't think you'll be able to accomplish that one.

By the way if you are taking public transportation - don't bother. SEPTA is on strike. No buses or trains running (for now). Good luck.
 
No buses and no sit downs, I want some mean dirty Philly cheese steak or something like that.

Leave airport. Find the first dirty, greasy looking cart - one that you can wipe your finger on the side and pick up grease residue. Order cheesesteak. Eat. Shit your pants on flight. Congratulations, you've now had a Philly cheesesteak experience.
 
dude, you really think you can leave the airport and come back for your flight? i suggest staying around south philly for cheesesteaks, my personal favorite is tony lukes as going into center city (for reading terminal market) would take way too much time. It's right off of I-95. pats and genos suck in my opinion. get yourself a nice cheesesteak and hurry the F back to the airport. how the hell are you gonna get there though, you're gonna have to take a cab or something

There we go! 14mins each way sans traffic....Ill still have over 2 hours to go back through security.

To be serious, gonna agree with this guy here. Pats and Genos are terrible. Get a Tony Luke cheesesteak with american cheese. Delicious.
 
There is very little by the airport - its not really "in" the city so to speak. You need to drive or take the bus. If you were able to do that, I'd offer some suggestions.

Don't forget to take into account the wait there. If it's anything like Jim's on South Street, the wait could be like 30-45 minutes. I've never been to either Pats or Ginos, though, so idk.

But at a non-peak hour, security might be very fast. The last few times I've gone through security it took less than half an hour to go from airport door to gate. I've never really had a painful experience at the Philly airport yet, actually.

During the day, the wait at Pats will be short. And people are complaining about security - I fly through PHL quite often, and I never have problems. 10 minutes tops.

If you are feeling up for it, grab a taxi to Pats, get a cheesesteak (and cheese fries - pats has the best cheese fries ever), take the taxi back. It will cost you some $$, but if you really want it...go for it.

tony lukes is normally pretty quick, unless if it's before or after any sporting event, then it will take a little bit longer. i think that's the closest cheesesteak place to the airport.

My layover is from 2:40pm to 6pm, I would obviously leave the airport asap so around 3pm.

oof....that changes things. Rush hour in Philly starts up around 3pm. That "15 minute" drive into the city could very quickly turn into 30-45 minutes.

Lets see...hit taxi at 3pm, get to Pats/Genos/Tony Lukes at 3:30, eat cheesesteak, taxi back at 3:45, get to airport at 4:30, through security by 5, board at 5:30......

Its cutting it close, but still possible.

my concern w/ getting to pats/genos is that he would have to go up broad street a little bit and that would have alot more stop and go /residentialish traffic than if he went to tony lukes, which is right off the Oregon Ave exit on I95N (i dont know what the exit is actually called, but its almost right there). not to mention he wouldn't have to deal w/ out of towners waiting in line (most out of towners only go to pats and genos) and he'd get a better cheesesteak. and parking is really easy at tony lukes. listen to a local, my friend. if I95 is jammed though, he's fucked for going anywhere though. OP you got balls for wanting to go eat somewhere for a 3 hour layover!
