Which cheese steak place should I go to?

my concern w/ getting to pats/genos is that he would have to go up broad street a little bit and that would have alot more stop and go /residentialish traffic than if he went to tony lukes, which is right off the Oregon Ave exit on I95N (i dont know what the exit is actually called, but its almost right there). not to mention he wouldn't have to deal w/ out of towners waiting in line (most out of towners only go to pats and genos) and he'd get a better cheesesteak. and parking is really easy at tony lukes. listen to a local, my friend. if I95 is jammed though, he's fucked for going anywhere though.

From the map it looks like you can't get off i95 at Oregon Ave

OP you got balls for wanting to go eat somewhere for a 3 hour layover!

You can get off on the Columbus Blvd exit of i95, that puts you just a couple of blocks from Pats. Its longer than taking Broad, but if 95 isn't a parking lot, I think it would be faster.

Tourists won't really be a problem that time of day - its weekends that Pats/Genos are overwhelmed with tourist lines. Tony Lukes does make a good steak, although Pats cheese fries are way better. I personally would take a good cart steak over either of them.

you're right, you get off at the packer ave exit and go up a little bit and make a right on 7th and then a right onto oregon. this is all the stadium area, so at 3PM there's probably no games going on so you should be good.

I am not sure if you can go up front st. or not. i always thought it was a 2 way road. taxi driver should be able to hook you up though.

Nice, only 16mins. Which one do I go to though? Pats or Genos?

Why choose? They are right across the street from each other. Bring your "A" game and get one of each.

As others have said, this is a fairly dicey proposition to get off the plane, get to S. Philly, get the sandwich, and get back to PHL and thru security in under 3:21.

Worst case, there are Chickies And Pete's outposts in Terminals A-West, C and E. You can get a half-decent cheesesteak (or try the unsung hero of Philly food, a pork sandwich) and get yourself a bucket of crab fries. It's no John's Roast Pork, but it gets the job done without leaving you stranded in the airport.

haha, I forgot a MAJOR detail. It will be a Sunday. Does this make things easier for me? or is Philly like LA in that it doesn't matter what day of the week it is...you're going to sit if f'ing traffic.

Actually that makes a huge difference traffic wise - and lines-wise. The line at Pats/Genos on a Sunday is considerably longer than a weekday. Although you'll hit less traffic.

if you're going to tony lukes check if there's an eagles game going on, esp. a 4:05 game. you wont be sitting in traffic either way if you're going to tony lukes, it just might take longer to get your cheesesteak though.

It's November 15th, the Eagles and I will be swapping cities. They will be in SD playing the Chargers. Should I wear my LT jersey around Philly? 😀

N.O. That's a good way to get your ass kicked. I'm not joking, either.

Interesting take. How big are these things, could I eat 1 of each?

12-18". Not small, but not gigantic either (TWSS!) They're only $6, too, so it's not a major loss if you can't finish both...obviously you don't get to Philly to often so you might as well go all-in!

you can take food past a security checkpoint cant you? just eat the rest later. I've bought some cheesesteaks and got them through security fine for my brother in hawaii who's 10 years removed from philly.

Pats and Genos are overrated tourist spots, or crowded drunk food stands, but either way I don't recommend them for the food. Not if you haven't been drinking.

Cosmi's Deli has the best. Its a corner store in south philly, I think they even have a website now, which is really funny.

With a 3 hr layover, though, it'd be tough to make it up and back. It can be done. Call in the order, hop a cab, have the cab wait while you go in and pay, and take the same cab back to the airport. Keep in mind, PHL is about 15 mins from what anyone would consider to be Philly proper. I'd guess it's a 25 min cab ride each way to this place.

If you have to pick one of the 3 on the poll, Tony Luke's by a mile. The problem with Tony Luke's for a cheesesteak, though, is the simple fact that you wouldn't be ordering their roast pork. Their cheesesteaks are good, but the roast pork with sharp provolone is ridiculous. Also, last I checked, TL's has a south philly location on oregon ave by the food distributors. That's the closest to the airport. EDIT: Shit, that's the only location, thought they had another.

you are right about the roast pork. i didn't even order the damn thing until a year ago! tony lukes is better qualitywise and it's the only chance (i think) that you can make your layover.

there is another tony lukes at citizens bank park. it's not the same though, i ordered a cheesesteak from there and it was all facked up. thats what happens when you gotta serve 40000 ppl in less than an hour at a ballpark i guess.

on a personal note. as much as i want to move to hawaii and am sick of the east coast and weather, i can't help but to feel that i will really miss philly when i move!!!!

Pat's if you like cold cheesesteaks
Tony Luke's if you like waiting in line for an hour
Geno's if you like good food and quick service

Ended up going to Tony Lukes and it was tasty. The cab fare was $50 which made the trip not really worth it but I am glad I went. I waited in line for 5 mins, and after the cab ride and going back through security I still had 2 and 1/2 hrs to kill.

You did a good thing by not going to the tourist spots. You would have been disappointed.

I would easily pay $60 for a cheesesteak right now.

Damn you Seattle.
