How about the same number of mods (they are volunteers) and just a lot more common sense and courtesy.

Unfortunately, that isn't going to work. The Neffers are incapable of policing themselves. When someone else points it out, the Neffers are defended by others. This is illustrated, here.

You grinches can go somewhere else if you want an uptight, little-children atmosphere.

Because the Neffing has been tolerated for so long, it just gets worse and worse. That is a fact of life in our culture. Once one thing gets exploited, others come along and exploit it as well. It eventually gets to a point where the fix is often drastic or seems drastic. The longer it is allowed to happen (Neffing) the harder the fix will be to implement and the more turmoil it will cause.
Personally, I see OT being shut down eventually. It will became too much trouble and other forums have handled the same problem by shutting down OT. Hardware Central is an example. They recently just opened OT back up after it was shut down for 3 years or so.
I see the fix as "Shock and Awe". Nip it in the bud.

Do you think that it has anything to do with inconsistency in modding? Or lack of mods?
I ask because I see a drastic difference in the tone of threads based on when a mod is there or not. I also see a difference when something is allowed to go on from one poster but not another.

It is kinda like a kindergarten teacher walking out of the room for a while.

Do you think that more mod presence and strict adherence to the rules would make a difference?

I think it's because different Mods have different opinions on what is acceptable. That gives the appearance of inconsistency and favoritism.

I think strict adherence to what ever rules we have is what would make the difference. Thus we need a rule that says, "if you start a Nef thread, you get 1 month off". People would still Nef in the threads but it will cut down on the worthless threads and possibly wean people away from Neffing.

That is exactly what I meant! :)

I remember when parody threads were locked immediately. I remeber when P&N topics were moved. I remember if if empty posts were not allowed. Now, they all abound and since it is left unanswered by the mods, it kinda gets worse and worse until the idea of it being not allowed and locked are watered down and ppl wonder why it happened. Now, I would bet that 3/4 of the ppl in OT don't even know what the rules even are.

As far as the favoritism.. it is not as bad as it was about two months ago. For a while it was blatantly obvious, even to clueless old me. ;)

I have always wondered about the mod thing though... I mean, do they elect each other? What if they disagree about something? What if one mod does something 'wrong'? Do they pulled to the carpet by the other mods? What if the mods don't like each other?
Hahaha!! these are life's great mysteries.
;)

But I do agree with you that if broken rules are dealt with more harshly on a consistent basis, it would cut stuff down a lot.

The current Mods discuss/vote on new Mods.
I am sure they disagree but I personally don't know how they solve it. I would assume senority or majority rules.
Mods have been "fired" and Mods have resigned.

With all due respect oldsmoboat and karen, i really don't see the problem in OT, it's called off topic, not 'protestant england' for a reason, and the odd parody thread never actually hurt anyone did it...? While i'm certainly not condoning nef fests, they appear to have been dealt with perfectly adequately so far.

I can't say the same for my appreciation of the trolling in CPU that's being happening tho', but since i've never seen either of you post in there i can't imagine it concerns either of you very much...;)

I don't care about parody threads either. I just used that as an example. If the rules say no parody threads and they dont get locked, then everyone will think it is ok to post them. Then if one or two do get locked, as per the rules, ppl will be like WTF? It could be parody threads, or nipple shots, or a repost or whatever.

As far as nef fests being dealt with.. meh.. sometimes yes, some times no. But not really with a strong degree of consistency. I suppose it depends on whether or not a mod is on, and which mod it is.

And you are correct in your stance that what is happening with the trolling of CPU. It doesnt affect me at all. But that just proves my point, I think. What some ppl agree with and want, others dont care about. Therefore, a more strict adherence to the rules across the board might sort it all out on every forum.

:)

As the Mod who has to clean up the crap every morning I agree. It seems like between 11 PM and 5 AM stupidity rules supreme.

Perhaps more mods are needed to be around during that time? I know you guys/girls are doing a lot already, and not being paid for it, but maybe that just goes to show that there isn't enough coverage. You all can't be everywhere all of the time, but it seems to me that people only do it when mods aren't around...and the 11pm to 5am time frame is one of those times.

Edit: i'm sure it's much easier said than done though.

Well i'm sure it wouldn't hurt them to ask someone who is usually on in that time frame to do it...

There are a fair few of us who are regulars then who would be glad to help. But i suspect they don't want to expand the little clique they've got going, or this would have been done long ago, it's not as if the late night problem is new...

And there's no real grounds in saying none of us are responsible enuff, it's simple enough to take away the privilege if someone's not up to it.

It's not the odd parody thread that causes problems, it's when there's ten of them on the first page when it gets annoying. The Michael Jackson thing was a prime example...it was bad enough to have a handful of posts with the same information, but then there were five parodies for each of those; and it completely took over the forum.
