nope, it was a lot more lax.

the "change in culture" in an attempt to make the forums something anand could show his mother or whatever killed it.
splitting the forums into countless subforums also created little sub ghettos where they withered and died.

Look bra, I out senior you by a year and I did done tell you: The rules were WAY more strict back in the old days. A couple of the mods especially were, uh.. special. That's why they went anonymous when they forced the mods to go public.

Sadly, I've been noticing this trend for a long time now...

I was against the forum splits because I knew this is what it would cause. I suppose it does make the forums more "useful" overall; easier to get to the information you want.

It would be interesting to know if site traffic overall has grown, even though OT is dying.

I had always assumed that forum traffic declined because people started going outdoors again.

Lol, what wretched BS! Disagree? Okay:

1. I challenge you to name even 10 regular posters who left of their own volition after that and because of that. Name as many as you can. Prove your claim.

2. Of those 10, I challenge you to name even 3 who didn't eagerly come back when we offered amnesty.

Well?

I guess I can tell my story in the era of post Derek, I reached out and contacted many of the formerly banned posters and put them in direct contact with Derek to have their accounts reinstated. This was after a couple of long phone conversations with Derek right before the mods were made public. Derek corrected some misconceptions I had about the mods, and I have long ago apologized to Red and GB for trashing them when other mods were in fact responsible for what had assumed Red was a part of.

I can name 3 who said no, but I won't out of respect for them and the fact that they're not here to defend themselves. I will say they felt slighted and wanted an apology more than amnesty.

I do think some of the rules are rather silly, but I do agree with the vast majority of what is done and has been done, I know the mods being public isn't super popular with the mods, but I like it a lot. With transparency comes accountability.

(& I think you're doing a good job as forum admin Perk, you've always been straight up honest with me, and open to discussion if there's a concern)

As far as OT slowing down, it's been happening for a long time, I hate that it's happening, but the only constant is change itself.

Allowing trolls like Neckbeard to remain is definitely hurting ATOT.
He's going to hit lifer faster than anyone in ATOT history...and afaik, he never posts anywhere except the social forums.

IMHO, the problem is that AT have way too many sub category forums.

Who in their right mind would open 40~50 tabs just to be able to keep up with the topics.

And, perhaps it may help if mods double check their bias & ego before they over step their power and ban people out of personal arrogant.

No, it wasn't. Back then you couldn't even swear. It was absolutely stricter back then.

Like others have said, it is the subforums. Too much compartmentalization harms everything. When was the last time you browsed the Contests and Sweepstakes subforum? Probably not in months, if ever. That forum only shows 5 threads and one is a sticky! It doesn't mean that you never want to know how to get something free, it just means that it is worthless to force people to click on it just to see these threads.

My average posts per day is 5.11. But I've posted less than 30 times in the last month. Mostly because I can't find worthwhile threads soon enough. And I'm not about to browse through 40 sub-forums every time I'm bored.

I and others told them repeatedly that they'd slowly kill the forums that way. But, that is what the leaders want. Why? Look here. Out of 14 suggestions, 3 are for more subforums. We already have an audio/video subforum, but someone wants a separate one for audiophiles. Ww have Off Topic which for years was labeled as "the type of things you'd discuss in a bar" but someone wants a separate sports forum as if you won't talk sports in a bar. Then someone else wants a monitor forum. As if hardware, AV, video cards and GRAPHICS, or pheripherals didn't cover it.

Is this the monthly Olds OT is dead thread? Should just sticky it so he won't have to post this every month.

It would be interesting to have a 'merge' week where all of the forums are merged back together for a limited time. Madness!

I think this would be an improvement on what we have  11 subforums vs the current 36?

The rules are def less strict in Atot than when I first joined. The reason no one posts on Atot is cause you scared all the interesting people away. RIP redsquirrel.

I'd say that doing away with the repost Nazi culture here would be an improvement.

We should just ban those who are so dull that they think we haven't already seen stuff that's several days old...:p

If folks would just do simple searches...much of the reposting would be stopped.

I remember there was a group of concerned members who warned that the forums would suffer as a result of the reorganization into all of those subforums. This was a few years ago when the reorganization was first proposed.

Replying in this historic thread.

I have more or less being lurking for almost a year now. I have lost a lot of interest in the site as of late. I used to look at ATOT as the cutting edge of internet pop culture. It has been replaced. If it makes you feel better the sites that replaced it I probably found out about on ATOT.
Doubt they will make a come back but I would welcome it. Used to really love bullshitting on here.
The last year especially, we are a 2 week late repost of reddit reposting 4chan stuff.

I originally came here for FSFT and remembered when your post would be on the front page for maybe 10 minutes if you were lucky.

Merge l&r back in. All the funny threads end up there, and I don't want to hang out with those freaks.

The thing that bothered me most is the dynamitedata thing. Although AT holds a special place in my heart, there is a lot of competition that doesn't have refer wrap every product link.
