Bottle heater (THIS IS SO MONEY)

I have one...it was completely worthless IMO.

Never had a bottle heater either. I just boiled them in a pot on the stove and kept plenty of them on hand.

Diaper genie is handy.

Also, a Boppy is handy for feeding.

Oh, a pack and play with a built in changing table is also very usefull. We had one and just set it up downstairs until he was potty trained.

Baby monitor with video is money for us. We get a lot of false positives on the sound only, and the video shows you if the baby is really awake or not.

Bottle heater is convenient too - you don't have to clank around get the pot out pour water turn on stove and time it. You just put the bottle in the warmer, add the water with the provided measure, press button and it's done.

Another tip is to buy on craigslist. We got one of those swings for $20, vibrating chair thing for $20, and the video baby monitor for $50.

If your buying new might want to be on the lookout for BPA.
I don't know much about all the details concerning the stuff, but you might want to read up on it, just saw something about it and baby bottles on the news.
Just search google for :
bpa plastic bottles

Just did a quick search.
Apparently you can identify it by looking for the number inside the triangle on the bottom of any plastic. If its a 7 its bpa .

Which just so happens that the cup I am using has a 7 on the bottom :(

damn this stuff sounds bad:

We bought one. It was nice for like....2 weeks. And then she just got pissed off whenever she was in there for more than 30 seconds and was strong enough to almost push herself out of it.

The bounce has been infinitely more useful/valuable. And about the same price really.

The only real nice thing about the bumbo was that it worked okay the first couple times we tried eating solid foods. It wipes off easily.

We had luck w/ our Bumbo seat w/ our daughter. I hope my son likes it too.

Temporal Thermometer easy to use and won't disturb their sleep.

Might as well get baby gates and those electrical socket covers because they'll be crawling before you decide to actually babyproof your house.

Car seat. * Make sure its one the hospital approves of *
Me and my wife are expecting so from the reading I have seen some hospitals are picky with car seats. Some want infant only, not the convertable type.

This, and take it to your local fire station to have them strap it in properly and all well before you need to pick baby up from the hospital.

great thread for a new dad. tons of great advice.

a bouncy ans swing are great! both my kids loved the swing. first one we had was a wind up one. the next one was battery operated (burned through batteries like crazy). Someone here posted how they riged it to plug into a wall socket heh.

srsly, the cloth diaper for clean ups is a great idea. i had them all over the place, always came in handy. if i had to suggest one thing it would be infinite patience. not for the kid usually, save that for the wife. she will test your every patience over the next couple months.

I'll see if I can get the three different things that went into it and will post it. You can buy the basic ingredients off the shelf I think.

My local fire station refused to do it because of liability. They referred us to the CHP. We just went to the dealership.

I have 3 still in diapers and will recommend having a list of babysitters who are available to watch the baby as you and the wifey go out on dates. In retrospect, taking care of 1 was scary at first, but after a few weeks, it's going to be a piece of cake. If you don't have the "What to expect...." books, my wife found it useful. Heck, I'd even mail you one for free!

Learn different ways of swaddling (there's at least 2 that I know of) cuz a baby might prefer one over the other. Be sure to get burp rags and store them conveniently. When you have milk dripping from your shoulder and pants, having a rag handy is $$.

All of our kids preferred sleeping on their tummies...just keep a close eye on them. Don't hold them too much; give them plenty of opportunities to just lie in bed/floor to explore their surroundings.

BPA was found to be just fine according to a news report a month or so back. We're not worried about it. But I know BabiesRUs is willing to let you swap anything that wasn't BPA free for their now BPA-free versions.

EDIT>> quickie search result

Microwave works just fine:
Put the formula into something that you can test the temperature in, i.e. a pyrex measuring cup. Check the temperature of the formula, not the glass. (stir it before you check the temperature.)

The disposable plastic bottle liner things are awesome! No bottles to wash. All you have to wash are the nipples & caps.

our hospital staff has a person that checked out our car seat. You may want to call your hospital and see if they will do this for you.

With my kids, they didn't mind cool or room-temp milk, so I didnt bother heating the water.

i forgot, we also got a changing pad that was curved upward on the sides so that the infant can't roll off while changing.

Vi's wifey the pharmacist here:

We actually make this cream for babies with REALLY bad diaper rash in the hospital.

Equal parts of the following:
Desitin Original (10% Zinc Oxide if you read the label)
Aquaphor Cream
Eucerin Cream

Easiest thing to do is to buy the 1 lb tubs of each of the ingredients (yes its a huge amount, but you will use it - 2.5 yrs in diapers). Use a spatula and dump all 3 into a giant 1-gallon ziplock bag and mix THOROUGHLY by just squishing it around. Cut the bottom tip of the baggie and squeeze it back into the original tubs. This will produce 3 tubs of the best diaper cream I've ever heard of, and you can keep it in handy places, like 2 different changing stations (if you have 2 floors in the house) and daycare/grandma's/etc. Makes poop cleanup super quick.

Our daughter had a terrible diaper rash about 2 days after being born while still in the hospital. Creamy Desitin didn't cut it. She even lost a layer of skin in the deal. We started using this and it cleared up in a day or so. Her daycare even asks us for the recipe periodically. They prefer this over Boudreaux's Butt Paste because it doesn't stink.

Our hospital made us bring in the car seats with base and had them sit in it for an hour (and no doubt make sure it's ok for them safety-wise). And if your vehicle has a latch system, I'm not so sure what else other people can do to make it safer... it's a simple snap-on.

only other thing with the latch system is getting the chair at the correct level.

with the infant chair we had to put foam under the back so it stayed how it was sopposed to.
