atlantis MAY have been found

well i saw this show on the history channel one day about atlantis. i thought it would be another atlantis never existed and what not. but i watched on and it was completely different. instead of atlantis being a continent in the atlantic ocean, they theorized atlantis was a civilization called the minoans. they loved mostly on the island of crete while also inhabiting other places such as the island Santorini. then suddenly santorini exploded(was a underwater volcano) which was estimated to be 4-10 times the size of krakatoa which also created a massive tital wave wiping out crete. now the most convingcing evidence this place was atlantis is because on the island of santorini they proved(at least when i saw the show on tv) that there was a circular city built in the middle of the island, and in a time where the rest of the world could barely make 1 story stuctures, the minoans where easily building 2-3 story buildings and sophisticated roads.

pffft...everyone knows that Atlantis was built by the Ancients and is in the Pegasus galaxy accessible via Stargate.

The Minoans were NOT atlantians. Plato's story may have been based upon them, but I highly doubt it. The MAIN problem with the Minoan culture is that their style of writing (known as Linear A) is completely undecypherable. So, much of what we know about the Minoans is conjecture and speculation. Yes, they were great builders of roads and palaces, however, the actualy CONSTRUCTION of those buildings were quite primative, mud blocks and the sort. Nothing compared to some of the architecture of the Hellenes (Greeks)

hmm ok but explain about the circular city in santorini

unfortunately akrotiri was closed when we went there last year.

much of the minoan civilization is in the archeaological museum in athens, so i did get some good looks at it.

Take a look at this PIC.

The yellow part is Santorini today. The yellow+red parts = Santorini hundreds of years ago. The theory as I know it is that "Atlantis" was a great city in the sea that occupied much of the "red" space in that pic. One day the volcano erupted and Atlantis sunk into the sea. I know a ton of stuff is in the water there but Greece lacks the resources or desire to explore it all to the fullest degree.

that doesn't seem to feature the south coast that fell into the sea about 600 years ago

This is assuming Rodney McKay doesn't blow it up first.

The first link was pretty interesting. Thanks. 🙂

Well, greek cities tended to be built around a central location, the Agora (Market). It's a possibility that the Minoans took it to the next step and LITERALLY built a city around the Agora. We have no idea. But it's NOT Atlantis. There would be SOME evidence of a hugely advanced society SOMEWHERE if they truely did exist.

the minoans were far in advance than anyone else on the planet, it seems.

of course, someone had to build the pyramids

Oh bloody hell. The egyptians had the technology to build the pyramids. And the manpower.

The minoans were just another one of pre-hellenistic cultures in the Med at this point...just one of dozens, including the Etruscans, the Mesopotamians at Ur and Babylon in modern-day Iraq (American troops are using sandstone blocks from the site of Babylon to fill sandbags, btw), Akkadians, Sumerians, Hitties, Assyrians, Chaldeans, Amorites...and of course the PHOENICIANS, who come the closest to "Advanced Ship-building culture" I can possibly think of...they're the ones who basically tought the the ancient world how to sail.

the minoans thrived in like 2000bc far befor the greeks were any good at engineering, and the minoans were wiped out in 1500bc from the volcano blast on santorini which also caused a huge titdal wave that destroyed crete as well. and as far as the evidence goes, other civilizations didnt start making 2-3 storie building for hundreds of years after the minoans died out. did i also mention they had indoor plumming too? all the evidence ive seen points to the minoans being the "atlantians". also there are pretty sophisticated temples on the island of crete.

Hoo boy. Ok, one of the MAIN reasons that that building was so large, is that IT KEPT ON GETTING KNOCKED DOWN! And it was built over CENTURIES, not years. But there was a very large population in Knossos, around 100 thousand. I'd like to see the buildings they lived in, compared to Minos' temple, to see if the architecture was similar all around.
