Don't schadenfreude too hard about Florida, Georgia is an actual swing state and Atlanta is getting hit.

We done did voted good in 2020 and 2022.

I hope Biden and Harris spend some time in Georgia if we get throttled.

Helene is Cat 3, 120 mph winds. Could get a good bit stronger before landfall, but I think massive storm surge and rainfall totals are going to be the bigger issues.

Almost a cat 4 with winds of 125. I really hope people evacuated. The word catastrophic is mentioned about the surge, eyewall winds and flooding rains.

KEY MESSAGES:

1. A catastrophic and deadly storm surge will occur along portions
of the Florida Big Bend coast, where inundation could reach as high
as 20 feet above ground level, along with destructive waves. If
you live in this area and were told to evacuate by local officials,
your opportunity to do so is almost over. There is also a danger
of life-threatening storm surge along the remainder of the west
coast of the Florida Peninsula.

2. Potentially catastrophic hurricane-force winds are expected
within the eyewall of Helene and will spread inland over portions
of northern Florida and southern Georgia when Helene makes landfall
in the Florida Big Bend region this evening. Persons in these
areas should be prepared to take shelter in the interior portion of
a well-built structure and remain sheltered until after hazardous
conditions pass. You may need to remain sheltered after the storm
due to downed trees and power lines, as well as flooding, in the
area.

3. Damaging wind gusts will penetrate well inland over portions of
Georgia and the Carolinas tonight, particularly over the higher
terrain of the southern Appalachians. Residents in these areas
should be prepared for the possibility of long-duration power
outages. If you use a generator after the storm, be sure it is
placed outside at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and
garages to avoid deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

4. Catastrophic and life-threatening flash and urban flooding,
including numerous significant landslides, is expected across
portions of the southern Appalachians through Friday. Considerable
to locally catastrophic flash and urban flooding is likely for
northwestern and northern Florida and the Southeast through Friday.
Widespread significant river flooding and isolated major river
flooding are likely.

Holy fuck, authorities have told those who didn't evacuate ahead of the landfall to write their names/PII on their bodies in permanent marker in case they need to be identified after the fact.

-- NBC News
We’ve heard that in our area too for past hurricanes. The other way you know it’s serious is when they tell you not to bother calling 911 as they won’t be able to get to you.

Low-end Cat 4 unfortunately seems like a best case scenario for wind speed.
It's official. We have a low cat 4 with 130mph wind speeds and still strengthening.

Just read up on this hurricane, holy shit it's massive and crazy. I hope not too many people get hurt. It's too bad the government doesn't have a better social safety net for those who need to evacuate. I mean, but that's communism!

Good. Give it to people straight. They should have done that this morning, might have helped snap more people out of any possible dismissive stubbornness and with more time to act on it. People seemed pretty sure this was turning bad.

With all the bad hurricanes we've had, with all the horrible flooding the entire damn planet seems to have been having these last few years, anyone in a storm surge area who decides to stay is a fucking moron. I hope children and pets aren't involved.

One of the hurricane hunters had an issue and got stuck in the eye for a while. They got the issue fixed and they are still out there an hour later.

140 mph winds now. Over 1\2 million without power so far. The storm also has its first fatally.

Don't know what the fuss is all about when Trump can fix all this with his God empowered felt tip pen. Yep, he's going to redirect that hurricane right at Kamala's house, fix her up right and proper and fuck all about how many innocents get killed along the way. I mean, it ain't personal or anything, it's just good 'ol politick'n done GOP style.

My family moved from Maine to The Keys back in 92. We drove, hauling stuff, stopped and stayed with family in Virginia. Got back under way, eventually passed through Miami/Hialeah/Florida City 2 days after Hurricane Andrew clobbered the place. Everything was just obliterated.

I will never forget it, and it's why I'll never screw with anything over a CAT2. Just leave, it ain't worth it.
