Sad part about this diet is no one actually reads the diet or does the research. People try it, do it wrong, then tell everyone how bad it is.

I've been on it a month+week and i'm down ~15lb~ (that includes water weight).

You people need to get the atkins book and keto stix and read your labels before eating food. half a bun? part of a granola bar? You're missing the whole point of the diet.

The carbs allowed, specially on induction, are very strict, IE: SALAD.. that's your carbs, lettuce. and you're only allowed it because it's mostly fiber.

Maybe you should actually follow it. Granola bar = no-no, many protein drinks also have a lot of carbs (granted, depends on type/brand), and prunes have quite a few carbs also. Sounds like a lot of carbs for Atkins.

Reading this post has made me very grateful for not having to diet. I am certainly interested in hearing how eating all of that meat is good for you when everything else I've seen is contrary to that in regard to steaks, sausages, bacon and the like. I might have to browse through his book at the bookstore to see where he comes up with this being acceptible.

Basically, it's that we have been eating meat, fish, and natural fruits, vegetables, and grains for thousands and thousands of years, but only in the last 100-150 years have we seen such huge dosages of carbohydrates in the forms of purified sugars and bleached, refined grains. Our bodies have adapted to handle high protein/high fat food, but it is only since this carbohydrate based diet began that we started seeing the rampant heart disease and obesity that we have today. Carbohydrates are the basis of our diet, and if you don't believe me, I challenge you to go into any convenience store and find me something to eat that isn't loaded with carbohydrates.

As other people have said, once you get through the induction and ongoing weight loss phases, Atkins is really just a normal healthy eating plan, with an emphasis on eliminating unnatural sugars and junk food. Isn't that what you've been hearing for years?

Triumph, I do indeed believe you regarding the abundance of carbs in many of todays foods. I wasn't arguing the point, simply curious as to an explanation which you've satisfied. Everywhere you hear stay away from red meats and processed meat blah blah it's bad for your heart then I read this surprising thread about a diet that condones it.

As for eating healthy, nothing wrong with attempting that!

today I ate

1 prune
1 apple
5 hot dogs
1 protein shake
1 atkins bar
1 big slice of pressed turkey

I don't know what diet you are on, but you are not on the G' D' Atkins diet.

This whole thread seems like one big Atkins parody.:p

My thread is a joke! :(

were you being serious?

have you read the Atkins Induction guide, because drinking beer is not on the induction list.

and somebody stated they were eating fruit? fruit on induction is a no-no. period.

My friend told me today that his gf's dad lost 16 lbs in 2 weeks! I'm 50lbs. over,
can't lose a thing. I exercised and cut diet for 5 months, lost 13.5 lbs, but didn't
work out for 2 months, gained 11.5 lbs back, lost 4 in the last month before
starting Atkins by reducing intake.
How many carbs in the protein drink?

hot dogs are ok according to the chart, ate so many because I was out of meat.

that's the first time I had an atkins bar or an apple, my sugar/choco craving was in overdrive.

the prunes are necessary, otherwise can't go to the bathroom, though I only have 1 per
day now. Apple also worked for that.
Sugar-free Metamucil.

EDIT: Scratch that. I don't know how much carbs are in a serving of Metamucil but it's probably pretty high.

You people are terrible at doing atkins, the first 2 weeks are supposed to be very, very strict. I started almost 3 weeks ago, followed all the indications perfectly (ie NO SUGAR, only carbs from high fiber/low "sugar" vegetables). In almost 3 weeks I'm down roughly 11 pounds incl. water weight (goal is to drop ~35 lbs).

And for God's sake, read before you start the diet, there's no point in trying to do a diet that you don't understand.

PS: Xiety, he's right about the diet coke. It contains caffeine and a sweetener (Aspartame or Nutrasweet probably), so it's a no-no during induction.

that's why there is caffeine free diet coke as well dude.

well, pretty much gave up on this on Thursday, went to the gym for the first time in 2 weeks today,
I've lost 9 lbs. since day I weighed just over a week ago, 10lbs since starting the diet.

Unfortunately, a LOT of it was muscle, but some was probably fat. I started eating
regular again yesterday, had the first sugar in 2 weeks at a Bday party, thought my heart
was going to EXPLODE after cake and ice cream. In fact after a veggie slice of pizza, and
2 pieces of pita bread, I couldn't eat for 18 hours until I had some protein mix after coming
back from the gym 15 minutes ago.

My protein drink is whey protein, the cheapo stuff from costco (forget the name),
says it has a 4 carbs and 2 grams sugar per portion I believe.

I still can't find out if hot dogs are allowed, or diet coke. atkins.com recommends against caffeine
for some people and against aspartame, but for the sugar cravings, but I can't live without it at work in the morning (green tea + nutrasweet/equal).

I just can't figure out how my stomache got bigger, unless I lost a TON of muscle these 2 weeks. Not eating sugar,
and cutting back on the coffee/mocha, and having green tea only the first week was probably pretty healthy for me,
can't beat that.
