How much can you expect to lose if you follow this plan faithfully? Is it a plan that'll help you shed fat quickly? I'm not a big red meat eater is chicken an okay substitute?

probably a lot... people will say it's unhealthy blah blah... but any diet will work if you cut out the junk and eat small normal portions, not value sized crap that eveyone sells

edit: cutting out carbs in your diet will essentially cut out about half of what you eat, so this is the point im trying to get at

472 pounds. :p

Doesn't that kind of depend on how much you weigh and how much body fat you have?

That is not what the atkins diet is about.

You caln more than make up for the lack of carbs with other foods, you are not calorie or portion limited.

The point of atkins is that you are supposed to cut carbs completely at first to train your body to burn fat instead of carbs. You are supposed to gradually add moderate amounts of carbs back into your diet. Too many people don't read the whole book.

If that's the case then any particulat diet you try is not going to be more effective than any other. To take off "that last little bit" requires hard work and dedication. There is no secret method to melt it off.

Eh... no, you will just compensate those calories with calories from fat.... there is no calorie restriction in the Atkins diet...

I love meat, i have to force carbs down just to get some carbs into my diet, i hate rice, pasta, potatoes, fruit and vegetables, so the Atkins diet would suit me very well, there's only one big problem... i would feel like crap...

Consumed calories - expended calories, that is what it's all about, eat less than you expend and you will loose weight... And give it some time, don't rush too much, you will just get tired of it and eventually fail...

Results will vary . . . it depends primarily on how much of a calorie deficit you create through diet and exercise. Daily exercise equivalent to 300kcal/d plus a calorie deficit of 300kcal/d will produce approximately a 1lb wt loss per week. But early in the Atkins you can lose considerably more as you burn off carb stores. Glycogen (carb storage) requires three times its mass in water, so every gram of glycogen burned produces a total weight loss of 4 grams assuming you void the fluid. It's the ultimate lie in the Atkins story . . . you lose more weight short term on Atkins b/c of the increased water weight loss and loss of stored carbs (skeletal muscle and liver are the primary depots). Atkins always compares favorably to American Dietic Association and American Heart Association diets b/c ADA/AHA cannot match the short term results of Atkins unless you dramatically cut back the calories and increase calorie expenditure (the two aspects of dieting that most people fail to achieve).

Atkins is going to slow it down. Weight loss from Atkins derives from lowering caloric intake, not accelerating caloric burn.

Atkins diet (and any other ketogenic diet) works the best when combined with exercise because you are in a fat-burning zone already. On normal diets, you pretty much use up all the glucose and glycogen first before burning the fat.

The Atkins diet does not limit how much you eat. BUt it does cut out 99% of the junk food that you used to eat. You can substitute with string cheese, pepperoni, wings, etc. But you get full pretty quickly.

Nope. Atkins weight loss derives from burning fat via ketosis, a much more inefficient way of deriving energy, but a more more "efficient" way of burning fat. Even on normal diets, after a rigorous workout (especially cardio), you are probably under some degree of ketosis. SOme might say "that's what diabetes patients suffer from". However, you do possess enzymes to break down the ketone bodies. Diabetics can't regulate the rate of ketone body production, normal people can. Type I (the severe form?) diabetics do not produce enough enzymes to break down keton bodies. There are plenty of carnivores in the animal kingdom that follow the Atkins diet. Humans probably survived the ice age "following" the Atkins diet.

If you have plateaued in your current regimen the best modification is to increase activity and fine tune your diet NOT switch to an entirely different one.

Increase cardio work... if you walk in the morning before breakfast, walk a little longer, that will take care of it...

What happens is that your T3 (the active thyroid hormone) has decreased, your body is trying to normalize the situation....

Oh, and be very careful once you up your calories, your metabolism will be extremely sluggish after your diet so the risk of putting on weight is high...

Question: is there really so much glycogen stored in the body that you lose weight by burning it off? From my personal experience, I know that I have about two hours worth of glycogen on board; if my bike ride is going to be any longer than that, I need to eat while riding. Assuming cycling burns about 700 kcal per hour, this would be about 350 grams of glycogen (kcal per gram?). Total weight lost would be 1400 grams....not even four pounds. Where is the big weight loss coming from then at the beginning of the Atkins diet?

No, because fries and sundaes are high in carbohydrate (starch/sugar) content.

The atkins diet is a starvation diet in discuise! IF you want to loose weight, cut out the pop and chips, and do some exercise for 1/2 hour five times a week.

Out of curiousity, what's your exercise regimen like? Adding a little intensity or duration might put you over the top with respect to your weight-loss goals.

It's the ultimate lie in the Atkins story . . . you lose more weight short term on Atkins b/c of the increased water weight loss and loss of stored carbs (skeletal muscle and liver are the primary depots).

While you do lose water from losing glycogen, the majority of weight loss from ATkins is not water. While on atkins, it is REQUIREd that you drink lots of water. FOr a average 154lb person, about 0.88 pounds of glycogen is stored muscles and the liver. Assume you;ve burned off all the glycogen, the max weight loss from glycogen is 4*0.88 pounds = 3.52 pounds. Therefore, maybe the initial 4 pounds of weight loss may be from glycogen. However, while on atkins, you are req'd to drink around 3 Liters of water a day. THat's about 6.6 pounds of water. Many atkins dieters see ~15lbs of weigh-loss after the first 2 weeks. That IS NOT from water loss.
