"Red. I started at 200, I am now at 155. I am 5' 10" so I am at my target weight. I am trying to decrease my BF% further using the ketogenic diet."

:Q Isn't that unhealthy? Doesn't the ketogenic diet require a dietitian's supervision? It's like high in fat and low in protein and carb., isn't it? Doesn't the food stay longer in the stomach? And doesn't the diet have side effects? I didn't know that it helped decrease body fat.

In response to original topic: Sorry I can't help here. Keep in mind that you can lose all you want, but you have to have the will power to maintain it. Maintenance would be the hardest part, for that's really how to test your determination to look as you do.

oh, I do exercise. A lot actually. But I would've never caught this bug had I not lost 15lbs in the 1st two weeks. I lift 2-3 times a week and run ~ 4 times a week. I have no problem running or lifting weights while in ketosis. THe lifting does suffer. As for running, I do not notice a decrease in speed. I do notice an increase in endurance and the lack of cramps that I usually get (probably because I don't produce as much lactic acid while burning fat)

Definition of ketogenic diet is pretty broad. It's basically a diet that induces ketosis. I eat a lot of meat. I do not worry about the fat that comes with it.

For those who are wondering about why bodybuilders use a ketogenic diet, google search "bodyopus" and "lyle mcDonald" It's basically, ketogenic diet during the week and carb up during the weekend.

One word of caution for those who wants to try the atkins. USE the ketostixs and do keep a careful count of your carbs. A lot of people fail because they never actually got into ketosis.

Several things you can do.

a) Lift weights if you're not already doing it.

b) increase the intensity/duration of your cardio. Consider doing some sprinting if you're already cardiovascularly fit. Search for HIIT, there are real fat-loss benefits to doing it.

c) start doing regular refeeds (i.e. cheat days). Periodically eating above maintenance does some nice things hormonally, not to mention psychologically. Try eating above maintenance one day a week to start. There's a ton of information on refeeds if you search Usenet thru Google Groups. Bodybuilding forums also have a lot of info.

d) take a break from dieting for a week or two. It's very difficult to diet for months in a row, a break can work wonders. Don't go crazy and eat buckets of ice cream, just go back to maintenance level calories or slightly above. Then get back into it with renewed vigor.

I don't know what your regimen is. But your progress indicates you've found something that works for you -- I personally wouldn't mess with success at this point by completely abandoning the way you're eating now (assuming you're getting enough protein, minerals, vitamins, fiber, monounsaturated fats, etc.)

Yeah, Lyle is pretty much the guru on ketogenic diets. He wrote the book "The Ketogenic Diet". :D

He's also a brutally straight-shooter. His posts to mfw have indicated that there's nothing inherently more effective about ketogenic dieting. It all comes down to caloric intake.
