ATI renaming some Radeon mobility series GPUs

Bad, bad move... This is confusing potential buyers. Why are they starting such nonsense? So now there will be mobile HD5xxx series both at 40 and 55nm? And either DX11 or DX10? I don't like it one bit, not to mention this is basically stopping progress where it's required the most - a low-power mobile HD5450 would be awesome - more battery life, more features. It seems people not careful enough will be thinking they're getting something new, while they're getting the old stuff with a new label.

If they by doing this trick people to think the 5xxx named mobility parts have Dx11, they suck.

And i could really belive people falling into that trap. Shame on you AMD, if this is the case.

I'll never understand when these tech companies rebrand stuff, they make the name either just as confusing as or more confusing than the last one. Why can't they just provide simple names?

What was wrong with the old naming convention? A mobility 4000 was a cut down version of a 4000 series GPU. You instantly knew which series it was based on. (*sigh*)

Didnt ATI Have an XT800 XTX version or something?

No, I think it was either the X800XT PE or X1800 XTX.

The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5430, 5450, 5470, 5650, 5730, 5750, 5770, 5650, 5830, 5850, 5870 are all new DX11 parts.

It's only a very small portion of the series that's being rebranded, and it happens to be on the low end where most customers are shopping for the lowest prices. Most of those same customers aren't going to be gaming, so what's it really matter?

Unfortunately said names don't correspond to desktop chips, which is equally bad.
The Mobility HD5870 is an HD5770 desktop 🙁 Same story with NV.

So while rebranding sucks, the original branding sucks too.
Mobile graphics cards are a minefield anyway, and this hardly helps.

Completely agree, but if your buying a laptop for gaming then your going to need the best mobile card that's out, and this whole naming structure is just meaningless.

Well the only reason they'd do that is if this either brought them some advance (like tricking people in thinking their old mobility chips are new.. see Nvidia and their last rebrands) or that they want to clarify their lineup.

Since we can with almost certainity eliminate the second option it seeems it's #1 - or does anyone here knows a legitimate reason for this charade? Can't think of any..

It saddens me that ATI would do the exact same shit that so many people have been beating up nVidia about.

Not the end of the world, but it definitely puts a ding in the brand's image.

Agreed. They can to whatever the hell their please with their own products, but that doesn't necessarily mean the people that know what's going on are going to take this kind of shady move kindly.

I was about to rip them a new one but I checked the aeticle. At least they are not HD5XXX series. Still pretty crappy.

Confusing and just plain stupid. And pointless. There's enough problems recognizing what is and isn't a good GPU in the mobile world. Rebranding makes baby Jesus cry.

I guess the only positive is that they're dropping one digit out of their names. There's really no need for 4-digit model names in the mobile GPU world. 560v, 540v and 530v is more sensible than 4670, 4500 and 4300.

I wonder if these moves are for the dells, hps etc of the world. The corporate buyers put alot of pressure on nvidia and ati about putting out new products or they wont rebuy the old unless they drastically reduce prices. These types of moves are ther to protect margin and to offset erosion...

Maybe the new numbers are more accurate with respect to speed differences or they really just want to get rid of the 4670 which is just weird since the rest end in two 00s.
If they aren't going to sell certain mobile numbers anymore it might make sense to rename them instead of keeping a strange number.
Then again they could very well be borrowing from nvidia and trying to confuse buyers.
However if this was the case I think it would have done better by calling it 5100s or something.

To be fair, the names of the new products don't even correspond to anything in their traditional naming scheme. 560v? Who's going to mistake that for something else?

Nevertheless, Its fucking stupid and will only end up duping all the people that don't do their homework and deserve to be duped, like its always been.

Orton has deemed this good, you must all trust in Him 😀

Seriously, where is the huge outrage about anti competitive practices, lawsuits and all the other moronic BS the Church of ATi crew was spewing when nV did the same thing?

Reality check- general consumers don't know what they are buying anyway, as long as you don't make a 580v that is significantly worse then a 540v it really doesn't matter at all. It didn't matter when nV did it, it doesn't now.

So for those of us that here that have pointed out ATi is equally as evil as NV are not the crew of that said Church of ATi, correct? Just making sure you are not ignoring the fact that there is a good number of fair minded people.
