ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB AGP $105 @ Compgeeks (Asus OEM) + shipping

Not a bad deal. They marked it as used but I'm guessing its a system pull as that's the way compgeeks usually marks things. It has DVI and TV-Out as well. It says it's an Asus OEM for HP.

EDIT: Comes up a $7 shipping for me.

I think this is a pretty good deal for somebody who only wants to spend $100 for a video card. I don't think you can get anything better for your $100.

Nice find OP.

I agree 100%, and it has 256 megs too, that usually adds a lot to the cost.

I'd wager it's a 9600 pro underclocked to allow for passive cooling. ATI didn't really make other cards like the 9600 pro so they could get away with doing that and still labelling it as such... slightly more honest than the newegg 9800 pro BS.

Well, since it is the 256MB version it is a 9600 Pro EZ with the slower RAM for sure (notice the TSOP memory chips), so I'd say a core underclock is not out of the question. I was just talking to my wife about building a HTPC/PVR box sometime in the future, and if the card is indeed passively cooled it would be a great HTPC card (especially with the hardware assist a 9600 can give to DivX video). Hopefully these things will still be available a few months down the road when I'm ready to embark on the project.

The only thing that worries me is Asus building the card. I've read comments from quite a few unhappy Asus video card owners in Video and General Hardware.

The funniest anti Asus thing I ever read was back in the day when their own video cards specifically wouldn't run in their own motherboards. I think it was in the Geforce2 days. So much for brand loyalty 🙂

Hi All,
I bought this card, received it the other day, have it in my machine now.
I've run Aida32, Radlink, powerstrip and everest on the card.
They all say that it's a radeon 9600 series card, not one say's it's a pro.
the core is clocked at 324, the memory is clocked at 195.5, and the card looks exsctly like the one pictured at compgeeks.
Did anyone else receive their card, is it like the one I'm describing. I am wondering if this is a 9600 pro.
Any ideas are welcomed
thanks
Ed

The core clocked at 324 makes it a 9600 non pro. My 9600 non pro is also clocked at the same speed.

I dont intend this to be a tread crap, but $105 + shipping for a Radeon 9600 non pro is not so hot, imo.

Compgeeks advertised it as a 9600 pro with 256 memory. As I said all the programs I ran on it, none say pro, all say 9600

Maybe I didn't make this clear, but it looks to me that Compgeeks made a mistake

I agree, I'm saying the same thing, am going to contact them and see what they have to say

Anyone hear back from compgeeks yet? I just got this board too, and while it works fine, getting ripped off is not...

I sent them a email explaining the difference between a radeon 9600 and radeon 9600 pro and telling them that they sent me radeon 9600 by mistake and asking that the card be exchanged for what they were advertising a radeon 9600 pro. Now it's a wait and see
Ed
I would advise you sending them an email also
