Good news.

The stock X1k cooler wasn't bad at all for keeping the cards cool when RPMs were high, & it was great how it exhausts out of the case.

It simply was too loud.

They could keep the same design for all i care, just make it much quieter somehow.

yup i agree with n7, on my x1800xl if fan was on 100% i would keep my load temps around 50c, but it was just so loud couldnt stand it.

Thanks to the unified architecture that ATI has been creating, its (supposedly) massively high clock-speed chip will not care much whether it is processing DirectX 9.0 or DirectX 10 code. This means that by focusing on making the fastest DirectX 9.0 chip available, it will naturally be a good DirectX 10 performer too.

wow, thats a little bit hard to believe, considering what MS has said about DX10. I really hope this is true, thogh.

Seems weird. I thought DX10 was supposed to decrease the overhead? Therefore faster performance. Funny thing is because DX10 is for Vista, the performance benefit will be decreased :-D
Catch 22.

No doubt an extra dollar will have to be put into the cooler design so that Vista's 3D desktop novelty can run all the time without the usual horrendous racket of a dinky high-speed fan.

Vista runs fine for me with Areo, and it doesnt increase the fan. Its not like Aero strains even the slowest of DX9 cards.

ORLY? I did not except a strain but I did expect more than idle/2D temps. Good to know... not that I would consider using it 'till at least SP1.

Im on the Beta, doing a dual boot with x64 XP. There is zero fan spin up for me, and I would doubt there would be for any other card. As far as I know, all the Aero stuff is in, but it is still a beta, so who knows. Areo is nothing that hasnt been done before from what I have seen, with different apps making things translucent, etc.

Very nice. I was struggling to imagine ATI making the R600 on par or slower than the X1900XTX in DX9 apps. Just wouldn't make much sense when 99% of the games that will be out at the time will be DX9. New cooler sounds great too.

If beta 2 is any example of vista - new hardware better run well on xp. The many bugs are to be expected, but I find the slowness of vista disconcerting and it is hard to believe that it will be fixed by January. The r600 seems to be on schedule and a performer, but talk of increased power usage and fancy coolers is a concern. Being green, I hope nvidia continues to make their gpu's more effiecient in use of electricity and others follow.

Isnt there a lot of error handling and monitoring process's going on in the beta version? Meaning the final code will probably lack a lot of that crap and should help speed it up.

yep, possibly around 100mb of memory usage or more being taken up by debugging processes. i think ExtremeTech did an article about beta and said something along these lines.

waaah my fans too loud, guess Ill turn my tv up louder, oh wait, I listen to music while using the computer, guess Ill turn the music up louder. Get over the noise, apparently you already have the money to buy a $300-$500 card, another $30 wont hurt.

Hope you guys are right! The thought of moving back to the future was disconcerting. I mean this beta sucks more than most.

Personally, I could care less about power consumption. I'll gladly spend the extra $1.00 a month in electricity if the card performs like a monster. I understand that power usage is an issue for some people though so I hope low power draw cards continue to be produced.

Sorry, back on topic. I'm curious to find out whether the R600 will be made on an 80nm or 65nm process. I tend to think the former but who knows. What process is the Xbox360 gpu built on?

The cooler, which is neccessary because of power being wasted as heat, was part of the topic. Which illustrates that the cost of increasing power consumption is much higher than the extra few bucks a month on your electric bill.

That is, if you're stupid and careless enough to not mind prematurely losing your hearing...

Oh, about buying aftermarket coolers? Yeah, if you want to void your warranty. At least a couple of third parties seem to be making cards with better cooling than the reference cards (maybe that's only for the other GPU maker, I don't remember).

ATi really need to take a page out nVidia's book with regards to cooling solutions.

Have you heard the 7600GT in action? Wholly smokes. I own both the 7600GT and X1800XT and I would put the 7600GT noise above the XT.
The 7600GT was so bad that I replaced it with a VF700 and left the X1800XT stock as it was tolerable.
Either case both clans could use some improvement.

I love the fact that it exhausts outside the case, just make it quieter, and perhaps a little more effective at cooling

would using a larger, slower spinning fan help cut noise a bit.....I've never been around an x1800/1900 but i know my x850 xt sounds like a dust buster at full tilt :/
