I was actually about to sell my GT and buy a XT PE until I found out it would be virtually impossible to get one.

why were you gonna do that??

Through a friend of mine on eBay who had a shipment of 10 cards coming in but he has also received notice that the cards were discontinued for now (whatever that means). Also, last week some CompUSAs got XT PEs in, but unfortunately, my local store didn't get any.

ATI got kicked in the nuts this generation and instead of standing up and fighting, they tucked their tails and ran.

Why do people say such things? You would think the mfg of whatever they like is paying them big bucks, and the mfg of whatever they don't like raped their sister or something.

ATI and NV both have excellent cards this generation. No one got kicked in the nuts or ran anywhere.

There are shortages of items and manufacturing problems all of the time that hold things up, and paper launches are common everywhere, so what is the big deal here? It's not like this is the first time this has happened with video cards, or with many other items.

Pretty pathetic. When bananas grow late, apes grow angry.

Yes, it's so unlike the 6800GT/U which can be found in volume at every Mom & Pop electronics store.

It doesn't even come close to compare Greig. eVGA and BFG sold thousands in the USA for MSRP. While the XT PE is getting sold on ebay for over a thousand dollars.

4 months and counting. This doesn't "happen all the time".

It's more like an 'Enron launch'.

So you're saying that the 6800U (which is rival to the X800XT PE) which was launched 1 month earlier than the X800XT series can be found in large numbers, in stock, and at or below MSRP? I don't think so.

I think it's lame of BOTH companies to "launch" their cards so far in advance of significant production numbers. But let's be honest. They're BOTH guilty of it, not just ATI.

Neither ATI nor Nvidia are entirely to blame. If you really want to get angry at a certain company, direct your fury over to Samsung.

4 months? Perhaps not, but why all the vitriol from some folks?

Do they think ATI or NV or any mfg deliberately do this to irritate their customers or something?

Does the 5800U qualify here?

It would be interesting to know if ATI/Nvidia knew in advance that there would be a GDDR3 memory shortage and went ahead with paper launches anyhow or if Samsung assured them of sufficient volume production and simply ran into yield/manufacturing problems.

I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

For those of you interested, ATI released a press statement saying that the card has NOT been discontinued.

This is an interesting development if proved true.

I can only imagine they are just going ahead with their R480 refresh instead?
Or was the 16 pipe last minute change too much for ATI to overcome?

I guess we will find out over the next couple of weeks. But if this is true. This is a major sorespot for ATI as now Nvidia can push the X800 Pro into the sub 300 market using their 6800s and 6800 GTs.

Blame ATI's stupid lack of foresight. :p

NOT Samsung

And ATI did do it DELIBERATELY - PAPERLAUNCH a card 'nVidia Style' just to 'steal thunder' away from their competition - damn us, the consumer.

ATI sucks just as bad as nVidia (coming from a former ATI 'fan') . . . over 4 months is PATHETIC. :p

Quickly, Name another PaperLaunch as retarded as this one.*

QUICK!

can't, can you. :p

*edit: Bitboys doesn't count; software doesn't count - HW from a MAJOR - considered 'reliable' - launch

I thought the 450mhz 6800UE was paper launched to take the thunder away from the XT-PE. :D

why do people make a big stink about paper launches and delayed releases? do people really take offense if they have to wait for a new product that is utterly and completely unnecessary?

And you're not comparing the same range of cards.

Thousands of X800 Pros have been sold. How many 6800 Ultras have been?

Errr, the equivalent of the X800 Pro would be the 6800 GT, not Ultra. In fact, the 6800 NU is a more accurate comparison, since it's also a 12-pipe part. I'd wager 6800NU availability is at least as great as X800 Pro availability, and even 6800GT availability is probably higher now.

The 6800 Ultra, while not exactly something you can walk into your local store and grab off the shelf, is MUCH easier to find than the XT, its direct competitor.

Yes, both companies screwed up this launch, both companies paper launched long before availability, but nVidia's quantities are picking up while ATi's aren't. We'll see if ATi can rectify that within a month or so.

Where did you see this press release?
I'm hoping its true considering I just got off the phone with PC Connection and they said they "don't know if they will be getting the card." To me this means they have not recieved official word either.

What's interesting is that guy said something about ATI continue to ship 4 X800s. hahahahaha. Its one thing to say you're not going to discontinue the PE, but then to try and spin like they are shipping 4 versions takes balls.

thats not sheit, its chocolate mousse!
