When good marketers go bad--story at 11!

Same thing happened with nV and the FX line-up. Trailing hardware and idle marketers led to some iffy propaganda.

This one's pretty funny, tho, if a bit profane for mainstream PR. But then, edgy's all the rage with the kids these days. :p

ATi appears to be operating under the law of supply a lie and demand attention with first the phantom X700XT and now the solidifying but way overpriced X800 and X800XL. They need to get their act together, as they've been riding the 9800P in the midrange since before the dawn of time. Meanwhile, nV's had both the 6600GT and the 6800 running unchecked in the $200-300 price zone for a good, long time.

To say nothing of the 6800GT...

Regardless of the abstract, I think NV came out realistically ahead this generation in terms of availability, sales, and winning the value contest. They have the best bang for buck card at both the $200 and $400 price points (critical in the high end), and what's more, you can actually buy them. They have the ONLY card at the $300 price point, at least until the X800XL makes its way down there, which could be God knows when.

That said, ATi continues to be strong on the notebook sector and is still fine with OEMs (as is Nvidia), and those two places are where the real meat is as far as revenue is concerned.

Bottom line, while I think NV did better for the customers and itself this round, that certainly wasn't the case through the 3x generation of cores, so the coin can flip overnight. It's almost 2Q again folks, which means the graphics wars should be heating up again soon. Grab your lawnchairs and popcorn :)

Are you guys really expecting much in the way of a new graphics card war though?

Since ATI still hasn't delivered on the X800XL (and by this I mean they haven't offered a competitive product @ a competitive price....yet) or on any of the X850 series, do you think they will have anything new in the next several months? I think it will take them that long just to get the X800/X850 series squared away.

Same with NV. They have a good lineup of cards, but it seems like they are all running near their limits, not to mention the lack of funtionality on some of their high end chips.

Furthermore, neither company has delivered any high end PCIe stuff @ any realistic price.

I think both companies stretched so hard to make this latest generation competitive, they perhaps overreached a bit and need some time to collect themselves and get their current products stabilized.

The only real update I'm expecting are some native PCIe 6800 stuff from NV (their current stuff is still using the bridge chip I think) which would hopefully lead to some price reduction so the 6800GT competes closer to the X800XL. Maybe a $50 difference instead of $100.

Frankly, as someone who hopes to go to PCIe, I'd just be happy to see some of the higher end stuff @ MSRP instead of 50% over.

You never said anything about MSRP, you just implied it wasnt out yet. And as I have said, it has been for weeks.

That is very debatable if you're talking about PCI-E cards.

I draw the greatest amount of entertainment from each new launch in the shenanigans and childish bashing the companies do of each other. Just watching the FUDfests is worth the price of admission.

I'm expect a lot of launches for the new graphics war...whether or not the cards will actually show in a timely manner is anyone's guess.

You know darn well what the original poster meant, so actually, you know you are wrong. You can try to argue semantics, but pretty much everyone with an open mind and everyone actually trying to buy one of these cards knows that you are wrong as well. Once these are available for close to MSRP (say within $30) then I'll agree that they are available.

When a card is only in stock @ a limited number of places and when they are charging 50% over MSRP, then the card is simply not available, especially when you look back @ the AT X800XL review where it was noted that one of the main purposes of the card was to get a good supply in the pipeline upon release in order to prevent the problems that occurred with the X800Pro and X800XT @ launch. It is quite evident ATI and their partners have failed @ that goal.

However, it won't really hurt them too much because NV doesn't have a good PCIe upgrade path for those with 9700pro's or better either. The 6600GT (and 6800 standard) are definitely a step up, but not a large enough one IMO. I think many owners of 9700pro's or higher are still waiting for either company to get a PCIe card between $200-$400 that offers a substancial improvement. I know I am. I am really looking forward to the X800XL, but I wonder how long I'll be waiting until they are as available as the 6600GT or the last gen cards.

Actually, I was right.

Lets recap on what happened.

Someone said this:

I simply said it has been out for week, which is has. Cut and dry, simple as that.

They are not 50% over MSRP, ZZF has one for $430. Which is still well above MSRP, but not the 50% you claim.

Since they are not within $30 of MSRP, I guess the PCI-E 6800GT&Ultras are not available too? Wrong, they are out there as well.
