ATI 9800Pro sucks!!!

Your problems most likely are related to the VIA chipset. I don't care what anyone says, those chipsets are more incompatible than Intel and not worth the trouble.

Do you work for nVidia or Jetway or what? Why do you plug the 64-bit 5200 at every opportunity? Why can't you accept that the 5200 sucks for any somewhat modern game, unless you're OK with low resolutions and details? A 64-bit 5200 may actually be good enough for CS, but not much newer games.

Robor you had to ask 😉,I remember playing CS in the old AT server years ago(remember Neo`s AT server) and it was fun with other AT members like GirlFriday,Blackflagg and few others I could meantion especially on the Rats maps..
I would liken that to me saying Tribes (with the Renegades mod running on the server) is the best team based multiplayer game ever. Graphics and sounds are average at best yet in an organized match with two good clans/tribes (IMO) there is no better. So I think I understand it now. 😉 🙂

It very well could be a hardware problem, but I'd lean more towards a driver/configuration issue. Have you tried testing it with other games, or 3DMark01/03? Does its performance seem OK?

I did my first 3DMark03 test last night and got a score of 2805. It actually crashed during first run of the test. I'm getting frustrated..

You said this is a new system; have you done stability testing on it? Try running memtest86 and Prime95's torture tests on it and see if those pass. If not, you have some bad hardware.

That score is WAY too low unless you have AA and AF turned on. You should get 5500-6000 with them both disabled (set to 'application preference' in the drivers).

Also, did you install the drivers for your motherboard? BEFORE the graphics card drivers and DirectX9? Try uninstalling the video and chipset drivers, then reinstalling the chipset drivers, THEN DX9, THEN the video card drivers, with reboots in between. Also set AGP to 4X and turn off 'Fast Writes' if it's enabled in your BIOS. That should fix any compatibility issues. It's also possible you got a bad card; it does happen occasionally.

Ive seen that card in UT2004 and BF:Vietnam, its not pretty to say the least 😉

Mem: I believe have all the drivers are updated. I used the drive update utililties from MSI to update all the drivers. I believe the hyperion driver is the 4.51 version.
I tried lowing my AGP to 4X and it seems to work, with vsyn "on". so, maybe it's the AGP driver that is bad on my mobo.
And yes I do use a quality psu, I have an Antec 350W.

I don't think VIA chipsets are more incompatible then Intel, VIA is actually tailored more for AMD use. They have pissed Intel people off ever since they came out with C3 processor to compete with Intel.

mabster,I agree....I`ve used both my Geforce card and ATI 9700 on VIA chipsets with no problems, infact I`m using my old GF2 TI on a SiS chipset now, also my 9700 is on a NF2 Ultra board so I`ve virtually tried them all.

You `ll always get some people that blame the chipsets straightaway, while the experience user knows it can be many other factors that can cause the problem.

Robor,I think you do 😉.

Yeah! This 9800pro sux! It forces me to disable fast writes or it messes up my system, oh wait, that is inconsequential to performance so nevermind 😉

I just call the tech support at ATI, the tech guy is recommending me to try to run my CS with 4X AGP. I guess that the only solution. Would games running at 4X AGP effect any graphic quality issue?
I still need to play with the drivers, whatever happened to plug and play. These drivers are driving me crazy.
BTW, for the ATI owners, the tech told me to expect another Cat next week. Maybe that'll fix my problem or even further screwing it up.

no, and any performance difference, if at all, is inconsequential.

I wonder if these are the new ones (redesigned, with app-specific profiles) set to debut with R420 (Radeon X800)? 🙂

No difference to graphics, running in 4x AGP can improve stability on some systems, also the difference between 4x and 8x AGP is very minimal speed wise , so you won`t lose out in speed.

just did several 3DMark03 tests, with everything at default. Guess what, it crashes everytime, either at the mother nature(Test #4) or texture test(elephant and rino). WTF!!!

Are you using latest version?

Note: Please note that Build 340 is currently the only supported version of 3DMark03. There is also a 5.4MB patch for all older 3DMark03 versions (313, 320, 330) which you can download

ATI 9800Pro sucks!!!

Fvck you, sh!tbag!

try Turning AGP to 4x, this solved my problem with my 9700 pro (same problem as u describe) Also i had fast writes off.

aww boohoo CS didnt work on a card that was designed to run the latest and greatest. play something less last century and move on. sheesh.

I reinstalled all the drivers and have the AGP setting at 4X, which runs stable now. Did a 3DMark03 benchmark test and scored a 5368 on it as well. I guess I'll just settle with using 4X AGP. I bet it's the chip sets that causing this problem. Hope VIA comes out with new drivers or maybe the new Cat driver from ATI will solve to problem.

Tks for all the help.
