ATI 9800Pro sucks!!!

I just got my 9800pro 129MB and have been trying to play CS on this mother, however, been getting freezed up screen or sometimes will just out completely(no-sync with monitor) in middle of play. I have my vsync "ON" and AA and AF on 4x with latest catalyst driver(version 4.3, I believe).
This is crazy, I've paid big bux for this supposedly a bad ass video card. Does anyone know what I should do?
BTW, I tried playing CS with vsync "off". I get tearing and horrible quality (makes me hella dizzy!!).

Appreciate the help.

spec:
AMD 2500+ Barton
MSI KT6V-LSR
512MB 3200DDR
ATI Radeon 9800pro
80G HDD

I play CS on my 9800XT and 9800Pro, no problems.

You may want to know, there is no 16bit colour AA support, and only 32bit colour.

Also, try using the application called Reforce, which should lock your vsync to whatever you like to play at and be able to use vsync correctly with CS - especially in OpenGL mode.

I know your pain, but if you read some posts at www.rage3d.com's forums, you will be able to solve most of these issues with work-arounds.

tks Thor86

I'll take a look.
I forgot to mention that when my screen freezes, an error message sometimes would appear. Some sort of "VPU does not support (whatever text, don't remember)....... " error message. This can't be a hardware problem right??
btw, I do set my colors at 32bit.

Tks again.

hahaha.. I know Megatomic. I've got Unreal tournament 2004 (SE edition) still at the back burner, haven't got a chance to play it yet, still thinking whether to fletbay it. But seriously, CS is still one of the best games around.

It very well could be a hardware problem, but I'd lean more towards a driver/configuration issue. Have you tried testing it with other games, or 3DMark01/03? Does its performance seem OK?

I still don't see what's so great about CS. It sure isn't the graphics so what is it? 😕

It sounds as if you've never played anything else. CS is great fun if you want to run around tiny little maps with an itchy trigger finger, but I find the gameplay to be generally lacking unless you're playing with organized teams (and even then it's only fun for so long).

Matthias99, I haven't done any 3D benchmark yet, like I said, I just got this card. But I'll do some testing today. I hope it's a driver issue. BTW, do you know what's stable setting for AA and AF (4X,8X or 16X?).

CS is the best game ever!!! I guess it's simple to play and interactive. Definitly not for the graphics, cuz it sucks.

Sigh. Yeah, the 9800Pro sucks. It gives you within 10% of the performance of the fastest video card you can buy for the outrageous price of $212.. It offers you the second best DX9 PS2 performance in existence, for $212.. It offers you better AA performance and IQ than any card except the 9800XT, for $212..

There's a lot to hate about the 9800Pro Mabster.

LOL- if they would have been $212 at launch, every gamer in the free world would have one by now.

There are no stones to throw at the 9800 Pro Mabster. It does almost everything very, very well.

If you had nvidia, did you use driver cleaner prior to installing ati?

This is a new computer that I've just built, so I don't think Nvidia driver exists. I've even purchased my Mobo that does not use Nvidia chipsets.

I get ur point. I've heard good and bad things about this card, I bought this card cuz the positives out weighs the negatives. Right now, I just want this damn card to work. Help me out there...

Hit Rage 3d, not here. Search Counterstrike. ATI used to have some big problems with this game, but I thought they had all been fixed.

gameplay obviously, that is why i play it.

as for it running bad, maybe you need to update your motherboard chipset drivers? it flys right along on my 9800xt.

Just get a FX5200/FX5200 Ultra-enough for most DX9 games at reasonable speed-I have a DVI/TV Out Jetway FX5200 128MB myself.

Aafuss, what DX9 games do you play with your 64bit FX5200? At what resolutions/quality?
What is the rest of your system like?

How many DX9 games are out? One or two I believe someone said recently.....

I believe there are two DX9 games that use PS2 effects, TRAOD and Far Cry, and a handful that are "DX9" without PS2. (e.g. Halo, Gun Metal)

Yes, I have been trying to get aafuss to realize that he doesn't need a DX9 card at all for Flight Simulator, let alone the slowest DX9 card there is. He apparently bought an FX5200 with 64bit memory because FS needs DX9 compatibility, and he thought he needed an actual DX9 compliant card.

Robor you had to ask 😉,I remember playing CS in the old AT server years ago(remember Neo`s AT server) and it was fun with other AT members like GirlFriday,Blackflagg and few others I could meantion especially on the Rats maps, anyway back to the 9800 problem,I would disable fastwrites in bios and ATI Control panel.

You don`t say what monitor you are using, try installing latest monitor drivers,I always play CS in OpenGL mode with AA on "aplication preference" and "16x AF performance setting".

Check system info and see what hardware IRQ wise the 9800 is sharing with,I always leave PCI slot one empty(nearest to AGP).

You did install the VIA hyperion drivers, especially the AGP driver, btw try running it in 4x AGP mode(set that in BIOS) see if that improves stability.

One last thing I hope you`ve a QUALITY PSU like Antec,Sparkle,Enermax etc...it`s more important then just power rating..
