In that article, both cpus at stock, the pentium won 3 tests and the Athlon 4, based on frame time variance, although when the Athlon won it did tend to be by a bigger margin. So it wasnt a definitive victory for either cpu. In any case that was with a discrete gpu so is not really relevant to this discussion.

I didnt say that it was a flawed conclusion from THG but that they exagerated the pentium strength in the first review, to be declared a honor product generaly mandate a clear cut in the scores wich, as you point it, wasnt the case, also you re right about the dGC rendering this exemple pointless for comparisons in this thread.

Here are the frame rate variances from the first Tom's hardware review:

I count G3258 winning 4 games and Athlon x4 750K winning 3 games:

(And yes, I do stand corrected. It was Thief as one game that stood out the most. Not the only game that Pentium G3258 lost in frame time variance)

G3258 performs significantly and measurably better than 5150 in most games. The fact is an $80.- combo of G3258 CPU and mobo is BY FAR the better choice.

Also my wife picked the Elite 130 case due to its look, so the motherboard has to be mini-itx. The other AMD APUs might cost more, which wife will not approve as the budget is $110, that was why I jsut want to confirm if the Lego PC games will run with the 5350 for sure, since a few reviews stated a few supposedly low power games do stutter.

MSI AM1I mini-itx = $33,99

AMD Athlon 5350 = $64,99

Total = $98,98

The MSI AM1I has a PCI-e if he will need to upgrade later on with a low end dGPU like 260X or 750Ti.

Now, lowest 1150 mini-itx motherboard is ASRock H81M-ITX at $59,99

Celeron G1840 = 46,99

Total = $106,98

Between the two, i would rather have the Radeon iGPU on the AMD Athlon 5350 than the Intel iGPU.

If the OP is in the US he can use the sale prices---> http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2399287

I wouldn't touch a Celeron for $46.99 with G3258 available for $8 more.

Too bad about being $5 over budget. The Asrock MINI-ITX at Newegg actually had a 10% off promo code yesterday or the day before that. This would have made the total $109.

You are getting off budget adding $8 for the Pentium.

Yep, G3258 and Asrock H81 Mini-ITX is $5 over budget.

But then the game plays under 30 FPS with Athlon 5350.....probably 25 FPS average in that not so demanding scene.

This with 30 FPS average widely considered the minimum for playability.

the way i see it is for the op to take the recommendations and get which ever is cheapest.

If AM1 won't play the game acceptably, he will have to return it.

Tearing down a system and rebuilding and re-loading software is quite time consuming.

At least with the 1150 platform (which is $5 over budget) he won't have to do that for a long time (due to 1150 having a strong processor upgrade path beyond G3258).

Whatever the plateform nothing will replace a SSD, i mounted such an AM1 using a 5350, once i tested it i went to see a friend who has a laptop with a 4C/8T SB as he was complaining that it was too sluggish and effectively it was miles behind the 5350 in responsivity, and no, the laptop was not infested with malware, besides i mentioned that the Pentium/celeron have not 4k videoplay support, wich is quite annoying future proofing wise.

SSD helps with I/O tasks, but it won't do anything for gameplay.

If only Athlon 5350 and AM1 motherboards were much cheaper....

......and, in some cases, came with various BOM lowering components (soldered-on RAM, eMMC 5.0 + SATA port, DC-in power with AC adapter).

.....and had good Linux graphics drivers.

I think then it would become a lot more attractive, especially for non-windows gamers builds. This even with the jaguar quad core being a non-optimal match to the iGPU for playing classic games.

However, as it stands now I think the performance difference is too large on a typical (read expensive) Windows DIY desktop build to warrant the very small $24 cost savings compared to the G3258 and ASRock Mini-ITX board.

Proper solution is a Pentium Haswell (G3220 will do) and GTX 750 (or maybe even GTX 750 Ti since the price difference is minor).

A lower CPU or a lower GPU will make Lego games ugly and unplayable.

Try to drive a car (and there are plenty side quests that require driving a car) in Lego Marvel with low frame rate. Even a 7 year old will notice this.

And one other point: a game controller (or better, two) is a must for Lego games.

But, if the OP wants to keep the low power and cost thing going, there really aren't good options but Jaguar-based builds, and NUCs, each in very different price classes. An A8 would be an OK compromise, but not fit the power envelope. Making one very quiet will add further cost. A GTX 750 Ti would, likewise, be the cause of similar problems (much more than a lone A8 under load).

I understand that he aims to a very low power PC, but in my opinion (based on playing some Lego games) that will result on an PC not fit for purpose.

He already has a HTPC and the sole reason for building another one is playing Lego games on it.

that site has a G1840 for $130, if i look for better prices im sure im going to find the for everything, i not gona waste time on that.

yes ITX may be the only strong point of AM1 if you are actually counting pennies vs H81, FM2 goes way off.
Its just dont worth it, use a mATX HTPC case, its just a bit bigger, they have more room for disks and standart PSUs, whats the point of making it ITX when it can barely fit for purpose it its for? that makes no sence, AGAIN, either spend more money for a better ITX setup, or make it matx.

This is not a HTPC that may be used to play a few games with friends, like FIFA, this is a pc to play with the IGP, that gona be also be used as HTPC. 1st option FM2, 2nd option 1150, last resort AM1...

come on am1 aint so bad.

It is. Its obsolete before its bought and it holds no future. There is only only single reason to buy AM1, thats if you for some odd reason must stay below 25W TDP nomatter what and be cheap. And whats the future for this AM1 setup? Buy a discrete GPU only to be hold back even further by the anemic CPU and wishing you havent stayed with that nettop rubbish?

And youtube, no thanks. We dont exactly lack examples of people faking it on youtube either. So lets stay with review sites.

says you right?! that is such a cynical point of view, following this logic then desktop atom is also a pos and intel actually did something wrong[the intel remark is a jab at your obvious bias].
here is another video to lament upon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfmNf6xeT9M

The atom is just as terrible on the desktop if thats what you ask. And you may notice I already recommended to buy either FM2+ or LGA1150.

Using tablet/netbook/nettop/NAS style CPUs as desktop or even laptop CPUs is idiotic. Its the bottomfeeder concept to try and fool people into it. Its like ARM sales, obsolete faster than you can turn it on and then already look for a replacement. Result, sell more and make the buyer replace it to fuel the use and throw away mentality.

because everyone should sell all the things to buy intel extreme processors. face it dude atoms and kabini are at the good enough point for the majority of users.

The op is building a computer for a young son, im sure he wont mind not hitting the glorious #pcmasterrace 1080p60 mark.
