So, now that we can return to this topic after the mass god and atheist thread barrage...

I call upon you, my friendly heathens.

What say you, in regards to language use. Do you continue to use common language idioms that make reference to theistic notions such as god and his powers?

Phrases such as:
Thank god!
Goddammit
Holy shit
Dear lord!
[god] bless you
oh thank the lord!
Oh god... o god o god o god
and so on...

Do you still use these phrases, or have you discovered some other readily understood word combination that describes the same point you wish to make at that time?
I have found this topic confuses some people who know I lack theistic beliefs. They say, "oh why do you say "xxxx" if you don't believe? I knew you believed in god." And I have to reply, "no, I simply use those phrases because that are common language, and know of no other way to quickly make the same point or exclamation."

Only the highlighted ones. Course having been an atheist from birth they have no secondary meaning to me.

I always lol at atheists when they use language referring to God, or religion. What jarrs me out the most is that some of these people go out of their way to celebrate Christmas and Easter. That's like a Peta member showing up at a rib fest.

If you think that the way atheists celebrate Christmas is the way you as a "religious" person are supposed to celebrate those holidays then you might want to check your faith. We celebrate it as a fun holiday, a time to enjoy family, food, alcohol, gifts, etc... You know like very other holiday. You guys are supposed to be in Church praying or something. :awe:

Most atheists celebrate Xmas in the spirit of appreciating one another and gift giving.

Zealots exist on both sides. The majority (90%~) of everyone is not a pent-up red-faced retard who can't humor themselves and celebrate whatever.

Still, the fact that that day even means anything to them is kinda funny. Guess they feel left out and have to do something with it.

Christmas to me means getting together with those I love to exchange gifts, eat good food, laugh, get a little drunk and generally have a good time. It's about family, friendships, love, and good times. That's more than religion ever has or ever will mean to me. And IMNSHO it's more than religion should mean to anyone else.

The original meaning of the wintertime holiday is the the celebration of winter solstice. Christians co-opted the holiday and arbitrarily decided to call it Jesus' birthday.

Likewise, the original meaning of the springtime holiday is the celebration of the spring equinox. This happened within proximity the dates of Jesus' alleged crucifixion and resurrection, and likewise the Jewish passover.

So, in reality, it was early Christians seeking validity that decided to graft their own mythology onto seasonal celebrations already in practice.

Well heck, early Christians liked the original pagan winter holiday so much, they incorporated it into their religion. Guess they felt left out. ;)
Edit: Drat, beaten to it.

(Well, and of course there's the whole thing with Horus being the divine son of a virgin mother. :hmm:)

Did you start dating an evangelical or something? Your religious posts have gotten more strident and stupid in the last two or three weeks.

I think we have those days where religion, god, atheism, or any topic related completely took over the first few pages of OT. :D
Probably angered a few folks for reasons they didn't understand, and now their beliefs flooded to the surface?

Or... hell if I know. I like making things more complex than they really are. In case anyone hasn't figured that out yet. ;)

As for Christmas? Exactly what the others mentioned. It's a day for family for me, granted far more meaning to me now that I don't see a lot of my family all that often because I'm away from my hometown most of the year.
And, what am I going to do? Shun my family? Some of them believe, some make no discussion of it while others believe a little more, but it's never really a conversation topic besides when me and my mom talk as she tries to prove to herself her child isn't an atheistic heathen. I don't think that's been working out for her so well. :D

So my whole family gathers for holidays, not to celebrate the religious nature of the holiday, but to celebrate a holiday. Family comes to together and share a lot of laughs. I won't turn that away just because I find offense to the religion comically sharing similar themes with just about everything popular in ancient civilizations.

BTW, for a lot of us, the day "means" about the same as Thanksgiving.

Hell, for me it's basically the exact same thing as Thanksgiving, except the day of the month it is on never changes, and there is gift exchanges. And a fair bit of drinking.

As a kid, it was all about gifts. As a young adult, it's about having a ton of fun with the younger cousins, softa-nieces/nephews, and having fun with rest of the family.

Flying S. Monster? :awe:

I've been trying to incorporate phrases revolving around FSM, but I fear using them in regular conversation and having not only the mean lost, but actually having to explain it. That'd be boring. :D

Jesus Fucking Christ is one of my favorite expressions.
Goddammit and Godfuckingdammit rank up there as well.

In more polite company I'll sometimes say Oh dear lord. Not even sure where I picked that up.

Holidays are too awesome to give up on principle. It's not like I start believing in Jesus when I exchange a few gifts, eat until I rupture something and laugh it up with family for a day. Similarly, a pork loving Peta member might bend a few of their own rules by assuring themselves that the pigs were killed in an "ethical" fashion before they chow down on a succulent rib.

TV, movies, other random people? :)

I can't say exactly where I pick up any of my favorite little phrases like that, but it's almost always I heard it somewhere, and I just liked it without knowing it. Then the urge to say it arises at some point, and after that first time, when it just felt good, it sticks. :D

Christ wasn't born in the winter. Christmas was never originally a christian holiday. It's a pegan holiday with roots back as far as nimrod's wife (or lot's wife, I forget, I'm multitasking and exhausted and quite frankly I couldn't give a jesus h. tapdancing fucking christ on a goddamn pogo stick if I'm correct right now).

Easter is, but the only people who give it religious connotations are christians. Everybody else is out for the cheap candy and bunnies :awe:

I'm an atheist and I use them frequently.

I use them because it's common. Even Christians do.

I don't mean anything about "God".

Plus it offends all the pussies.

The only one I make an effort not to say is "God Bless You" when someone sneezes... Because IT IS FUCKING STUPID. Religious people shouldn't even say it. It doesn't make any fucking sense.

Actually, it does. Back in the days when mysticism ruled the world (heh ... heh ...), folks believed that sneezing was a physical reaction to a demon trying to possess you. Saying "god bless you" was supposed to be enough to send the demon fleeing.

Asher. There's an Old Testament passage condemning a certain Heathen practice where a tree was cut down and made into an Ashera Pole. When I was Religious, reading that passage made me do a double take.

No what’s really funny is dumb Christians that think Christmas is a Christian holiday.

2 hints: look up pagan and Jesus was not born in December.
