It is a sad commentary on the state of religion that other belief-sets are to be compared to religions if and when those belief-sets become "radical," "militant," and "oppressive."

And 90% of people don't believe in ghosts or astrology. If they did, a group might need forming to oppose them. Atheists are a targeted minority, and polls show are less trusted than muslims, which for america is saying something.

Further, joining a group of people who are non-believers might allow you to have a conversation where you won't worry you'll offend someone with frank talk regarding the idiocy of organized religion.

Nothing wrong with joining a group. It's atheism, not anarchy.

I won't be joining, I'm busy, and my friends are mostly secular anyway.

That's how I see it. I think it's a good idea to send a message to closet atheists that it's ok to come out. I didn't even know what atheism was until high school, with "God" so ingrained into society kind of makes it hard.

Do you have any evidence whatsoever, or are you just talking out of your ass?

Really? An ad is an extremely religious tactic? Maybe we should stop writing books because that's an extremely religious tactic too. In fact we should all just quietly sit in our homes and do nothing, because activism is a religious tactic.

Oh and a big FUCK YOU right back at a fucking New Zealander with a 34% non-religious population, where you may very well have the luxury to just be taken for granted. Well here it's taken for granted that you're Christian, and if you're not Christian that you're at least spiritual and if you're not spiritual at least believe in some vague form of higher power. And if you don't? Well you're just a bad person.

Putting up a subway ad doesn't make you a religion. You know what makes you a religion? Tax breaks.

Edit: I agree on an intellectual level that Atheism shouldn't even really be an -ism in the same way we don't have a word for non-astrologers, and in a perfect world we wouldn't. But we don't live in that world.

Look at the left wing today and the past and their grasp for power to control people, it's the same as religious groups who bend words to guess what - control other people. Why do you think Stalin banned religion? It's competition. Organized human institutions are the same shit.

Power hungry assholes are power hungry assholes. What a concept.

I don't know if an ad campaign is the way to go about it, but people need to understand that you don't need to be religious to be a good, moral person. Just to put things into perspective, people in the United States would rather vote for a gay or Muslim president than an atheist one.

I'm agnostic. Basically I don't care or believe one way or the other. Everyone is entitled to believe what they want, I only have a problem when people try to push their beliefs on others. If Atheists are doing this, then fuck them. I just think everyone should leave each other alone about this subject...go with what you feel, and be happy, but don't force it on others.

I think overall people could use some doses of "Don't worry about it", "Chill the fuck out", "Mind your own business", and "Quit judging people".

What on Earth does this mean? You don't believe in gods and you don't don't believe (i.e believe) in gods at the same time?

I neither confirm nor deny a "god". I basically don't give a rat's ass. I live, I'll die. Have you ever looked up agnosticism? Its more about apathy than anything, in my opinion. I can't know, I don't know, so I don't care.

Edit: I try not to be a total prick at least, and I don't rape children based on morality...well, also they aren't really attractive. Ok, what I'm saying is I try to be a nice person, but I don't worry about my immortal soul or whatever. Something may or may not come after death. I don't know, and neither does anyone. Just don't be a wise and beautiful woman and live your life I guess.

Edit again: if you can HELP someone before you die, then by all means, please do.

I have a fundamental problem with organized atheism, because it's just silly to have an organization of people who don't do something or don't believe in something. When was the last time you attended your "I don't believe in unicorns" meeting?

To a certain extent I disagree that there isn't a need for an organization for people who don't believe in something. When the organization(s) for folks who do believe in something start taking actions that negatively affects the lives of those who don't, then a counter organization should be formed to give proper voice against the believers organization. It's just more effective that taking separate actions.

Case in point--the movement by religious folks to ban gay marriages because it's against the teachings of the Bible and because in their belief system, gay marriages somehow threatens traditional marriages. Or how about the movement by some religious folks to get creationism taught in a science classroom? And lets face it, when most of these folks say "creationism" they really mean the Christian Bible.

If the unicorn believers organization start taking serious actions to try to get laws passed requiring everyone to go around with horns shoved up their ass when not taking a shit, I'd probably support the unicorn unbelievers organization.

As for whether or not we need to raise awareness that nonbelievers exist, I don't see anything wrong with that either because most people are sheep. Showing people that you can not believe in a unicorn and still be a good person lets the sheeps know that it's ok to not live your life according to the believers' rules. How many gay people grew up miserable because they were raised to believe that God will burn you in Hell if you're gay?

Also, I think saying that atheism is becoming a religion is misusing the term. It's a lifestyle. Religion is also a lifestyle, but one that requires belief in god(s). If this billboard is a big FU to religious folks, what would you consider attempts of conversions by religious folks?

For all those talking about the danger of religion, a society without religion will still do the same things...just with different excuses.

Astronomers are almost as bad as religious zealots - just as delusional, but less organized.

i think the key thing to take from the op is that he hasn't been attending his Anti-Unicorns meetings. :| WE MUST STOP THE PRO-UNICORN AGENDA!

The streets will run silver with the blood of those who promote universal unicorn care. :|

Or do you mean astrologers?

Yes this comment has me  too. I suspect you're right, he is mixing up astronomers and astrologers.

I've said it before: atheism can be hijacked just as any belief or system of beliefs, even though it's one that is loosely organized and solely dependent on the lack of belief in the existence of a god or gods. If atheism becomes the dominant view of most people (I think in practice most people are atheists), the "douchery" (for lack of a better term) of the general populace will be no different than when a religion is dominant, simply because in both cases people are hypocrites and will use whatever they want to justify doing whatever they want.
