You've only grouped with bad pallies then.

Their single target threat is insane if they're playing/gearing properly.

For some reason paladins seem to be the tank class plagued most by the "I don't need hit/expertise/(any other threat stat) mindset".

We got Rotface (25) to 16% so far now... but the only problem is that some of our DPS is kinda meh to begin with and when you get past the 4 minute marker, the DPS just gets worse with all the infections going out. I've varied from 7k to 8.3k on the fight so far tonight :(.

Is it his wonderful intellect gems? :p

Now I see why you people use RankWatch... it's gone off about 10 times in this Heroic. Although, I can't talk much... my pally was using one rank lower of Holy Shield and Avenger's Shield for awhile :p. Apparently, I never visited a trainer after switching from prot to ret at level 70 and then creating my prot off-spec at 80.

I actually got kicked out of a random heroic because rankwatch whispered the shaman healer and the pally tank about their downrank spells. it turned out those 4 people are from the same server and they didn't like that very much.

I pretty much just keep rankwatch to not whisper anymore, I just want to get my random done and get my frost badges.

A great day for randoms yesterday. Ended up getting occ on the lock and the scrub. The locks group started with a dk saying at start he had never done this one before. He was so skilled the group ended up kicking him after first wipe at the final boss. At which point we get a rogue whom after waiting a bit and not seeing him catch up responds he's working on meeting up but it's slow cause he's never been here before.

The other three members were from the same guild and I didn't realize till later how scrubtastic they were. While my lock was sporting a health of over 110k, most of them were at just under 80k. I checked later on my scrub and he has almost 90k. And speaking of this encounter, is the entire amber drake really that hard of a concept. I mean it's nice to just spam the regular attack, but if you don't build up a charge stack first you aren't really going to be doing nearly as much damage as you could. But it was rather funny to listen to that rogue say "I started using the other ability and it also started healing me".

I agree with your sentiment there. TBC was terrible for melee in most encounters as it was either run out or die.

Tanking isn't too bad, but sometimes the DPS can be a bit annoying and those pesky healers get mad when you overgear the place like crazy and pull tons.

You're right, DPS can be annoying. Most of them don't understand that threat is a two-way street, especially when talking about random pug groups. OMEN... get it. I only really get annoyed by the obviously over-geared dps folks who run right in and treat me like I'm their raid tank.

Everyone do yourself a favor and save yourself from frustration by doing the following two things before going all out dps in an instance with a pug tank:

1) Inspect them. Is there gear level much lower than yours? Regardless of skill they will need a little more time than you are used to in order to build threat. This is called math.

2) WAIT. In the first few pulls you can observe just how quickly the tank accumulates threat, gathers mobs, etc.

3) If a dps pulls a mob it's partially the dps's fault in most cases. Omen. If it's a large pack of mobs hold back just a second longer than normal to begin your AoE hopping madness.

4) Use all of your tools. My main is/was a rogue. I was good at being a rogue. Tricks of the trade? If you're not using it every cool down to help a pug tank (and subsequently make your life easier) you need to figure out why not. If the tank doesn't need it then you should be using it on someone else. Hunters should be MD'n every cool down, etc.

Anyway, other than one or two very heavily geared dps I haven't had much trouble. And the thing is, those highly geared guys are actually the most apologetic about it so I'm honestly not even really complaining. Just pointing out some things I've learned while building a tank from scratch over the last couple of weeks.

Did have a great group on the pally. Got a random into the forge (must be rather well equipped as no items were needed till the boss) and either the latest gear/enchant changes have really boosted me or the buff mix was just right as even though I was just beating the bear into 3rd on the dps chart I was pulling almost 3500. Only running with ony helm/neck and ruin axe while most of the rest is il200. Probably would be able to be a bit better as I've got about 150 badges between frost/triumph, but also been gearing up then tank side (which I'll be able to start reducing some of the DEF only enchants with stam and others as my base def is now up to 556).

Still having combat log problems with just 1 char. Erasing the file only works once, after logging and re-entering it's blank again. I then copied another chars file into that chars directory and that worked for several days but again last night it went blank. Even though I put chance of getting resolved §very low, may have to post on the main wow tech support forum anyway as not many other things to try that come to mind.

Last night my guild got Festergut (10) down after 2 hours or so. Had about an hour to spend on Rotface and could only manage 60%. Our tanks consist of a warrior (me) and a pally, neither of which seem all that great for kiting the big slime. WTB dk tank?

I'm debating as a casual whether to cash in on the Primordial Saronite craze. Right now they're selling on my server for about 2.2k each. Given that I have 3 level 80's that I pretty much just run daily's on right now (don't have the time to raid), the time it's taking to build up the frost emblems is too slow to really use it as a surefire way to get equipment, yet I have over 20 frost emblems on each of them. If I cash in, that's a nice quick 6k. Then again if I wait it out I can have a BiS trinket on my rogue, and some sweet armor on my two priests.

Also assuming that I only run the daily instances, that's 6,600 gold every 11 days, or less if I can manage a PUG raid.

I would, if I were you. And I did. I'm not raiding atm, so I have no need for 251 gear for heroics/pugs.

EDIT: In response to Loki's "great day for heroics", I had one nearly the same. Took an hour to finish oculus. I was DPSing on my rogue. We had a good healer. Our tank had 27k buffed health and 490 defense... but he came in with 2 guildies. He constantly went afk. The other 2 dps averaged ~2500 dps... combined. Surprisingly, we made it to the last boss, but nobody knew how to use drakes, the dps didn't use any of their drakes skills, the healer couldn't keep everyone healed since I was the only one who timestopped and the tank never kept aggro on his drake. In the end, his own guildies kicked him and said they were never letting him tank again, someone else came in, we killed it and I cried a little.

Jax, I reran my tests but this time, I ran them from 10% to 40% in .1 intervals (it took awhile :p). My god, you should see this thing :p.

http://www.aikouka.com/output10-40.xlsx

People wonder why others don't put much stock in Haste... what other class has a stat that looks like the Haiti Richter scale when simulated?

Note that the spreadsheet has 3 graphs... one for haste EP values, one for Haste DPS and the last is Haste DPS Deltas.

Paladins work very well for kiting the big adds. You can cleanse the people when they come to you and you can simply Hand of Freedom yourself and run through the ooze.

Unless you are dirt poor I don't see money as a big issue now as long as you have time to play. I entered wrath with less than 14k and have just passed 60k while purchasing non-epic flyers for about half my guys. Thinking about getting the 15+k elephant to aid in DM title farming. Would be even better if I had a way to access a bank/mail box like every 45 minutes.

Serious question: I've read a lot of things where people mention hording money for the impending Cata release later this year. How important is it to have a nice sum of cash going into Cata, and what is the cash generally for?

Ignoring the fact that you're a good 10 or so months away from it, until more details come out the only thing I can see it being useful for would be trying to horde mats for things like chanter/jc when people are first updating to max level gear and starting the first raids. Historically that's been about the only thing where having a large money pool has been useful.

This is hilarious. Maybe it's the old school in me but as a long time rogue my complaint was always 'I wish the casters had to deal with running in and out to avoid whirlwinds, cleaves, tremors, chase adds, etc.'.

With that being said I have finally decided to retire my rogue. LFD has allowed this to happen as I have finally had a chance to gear up my 'alt' Paladin as a tank. How have I missed out on this for so long? Tanking may be my true calling. I know it's just 5-mans but I enjoy it and I think I'm enough of a control freak to eventually excel at this role. I also have thick skin which can't hurt.
It's funny, but those who know me on this forum know I'm an antagonistic asshole who excels at getting people to hate me... this actually translates into WoW and I make a pretty badass tank, I've had solid dps comment on their inability to pull anything off me, or on the speed at which I taunt back if they do (only on trash ofc) o_O But yeah it's a fun and different role.

My main is still my mage though.

we probably won't know what the Cat gold sinks are till beta info starts coming out.

FWIW, I didn't horde money prior to WotLK and never had any issues... but I've also never seen the appeal in absurdly gigantic and awful looking mounts that add nothing to my gameplay.

I have a better solution, burn down the first mob and tell the tank not to bother with aggro on that mob. I can solo most heroic mobs (in packs) w/o needing active healing, if more than one dps is on the target with me, it explodes.

This lets the run go faster AND the tank doesn't get pissy.
