At what point do you start adding weights to pullups?

I started doing pullups for my lats instead of the lat pulldown machines about 3 weeks ago. I started almost doing 3 sets of 8, and then did 3 sets of 8, and last week did 3 sets of 9. today i planned on trying to do 3 sets of 10.

however i'm curious as to when typically people start adding dumbell weights between their feet. what I mean is I don't want to just get to the point where I can do 3 sets of 20 (which I doubt i'd get to anyways) but I would rather keep my sets at a 10x rep max.

is that typically a good idea? like if I get 3 sets of 10 today next week I'll add a dumbell between my feet and see how many of those I can do, then try to work that up to 10 reps.

since pullups are fairly new to me as a primary exercise for the lats, any advice on this is appreciated.

Give it a shot next week. Keep adding weight until you cannot do at least 6 pullups.

if you don't increase the resistance, as with most body weight exercises, pull-ups will eventually only improve your muscle stamina and not really their strength/size. depending on your goals, that can be a good thing or a bad thing. if you're shooting for strength, by the time you're up to 10 reps, you'll definitely want to add weight. start with 5 pounds and see how it goes. if you can do it easily, move on to 10, 15 and so on.

personally, I do a 5x5 system with progressively more weight each set. For example, yesterday I did BWx5, 15x5, 25x5, 35x5, 45x5. Every week I finish all 5 sets with 5 clean reps in each, I go up 5 pounds for the next session, so next week will be BWx5, 20x5, 30x5, 40x5, 50x5.
